ASM International, Materials Park, Ohio, is searching for qualified candidates to fill a newly created position—Director, Computational Materials Data. Reporting directly to ASM’s managing director, the role will provide technical leadership and management for ASM’s Computational Materials Data (CMD) Network, which supports, facilitates, and promotes collection, dissemination, and management of materials data. Launched in response to the U.S. Materials Genome Initiative, the network aims to advance materials development and deployment by facilitating information sharing within the materials community.
First and foremost, the director will lead development efforts and engage with the materials data community to conceptualize, design, develop, deliver, and promote CMD Network programs and services, including data curation projects, workshops and events, and education courses. In addition, the new director will provide technical guidance and management for CMD Network data initiatives, including management of support staff. Developing a community of dedicated partners and members is another top priority of the new position. Finally, the director will serve as the brand ambassador for the CMD Network, providing expertise and thought leadership on data issues for integrated computational materials engineering, including best practices for management and curation of materials data and integration with modeling, simulation, and analysis programs.
“We have ambitious goals for the CMD Network, and we recognize that to achieve our key initiatives we need strong technical leadership,” says Scott Henry, ASM’s director of content and knowledge based solutions. “We’re looking for a talented and dynamic individual to fill this important position, which ultimately supports the goals of the U.S. Materials Genome Initiative.”
Responsibilities include serving as the single point of accountability in successfully delivering new programs and services, and acting as a technical liaison to the engineering community on behalf of the CMD Network on concepts related to the management and curation of materials data. The director will also provide expertise regarding data management and database development projects, as well as lead development of new conferences, symposia, workshops, and education courses in areas related to materials data. In addition to the CMD role, the director will supply technical guidance and leadership for new and established ASM programs, products, and services and support ASM staff in understanding and effectively incorporating technical concepts and terminology.
Qualifications include an advanced degree in materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering, data analytics, or a related discipline plus 10 years of professional experience as a research scientist/engineer or a combination of education and experience, with some of this background in a leadership or management role. Candidates should have documented expertise in topics related to the development, use, curation, and management of data.
