ASM International (ASM) today named Tom Dudley Interim Managing Director of ASM. In this role, he will be responsible for society operations while the board of trustees conducts a national search for a permanent Managing Director.
Mr. Dudley was chosen by a selection committee headed by Jackie Earle, a Trustee of ASM International and metallurgist at Caterpillar. The search committee recommended Mr. Dudley based on his experience, business acumen, leadership and ability to carry out ASM’s vision. Mr. Dudley officially assumed this new role at Materials Park on February 8, 2016.

A physicist by trade with a major in astrophysics, Mr. Dudley has been a private consulting engineer in oil and gas, applications engineer for biopharmaceutical, medical device and petrochemical markets, and has an extensive background in aerospace, semiconductor and power industry applications. He has worked extensively with nickel-based alloys and stainless steels; holds a patent for the prediction of weld corrosion resistance and pioneered alloy 254SMO as the de facto standard for offshore oil and gas valves.
In his most recent position, he worked as Group Vice President of technology and innovation for Parker Hannifin Corporation. In that role, he held global fiscal responsibility for $1.2 billion and had 200 engineers and scientists reporting to him. During his 11-years with the company, he launched dozens of new products that achieved sales totaling $750 million.
Dr. Tirumalai Sudarshan, President and CEO of Materials and Modification, Inc., will lead the committee conducting a national search to select the Society’s next Managing Director. The committee has a goal date of October 2016.
