The International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technology (SMST), an Affiliate Society of ASM International, Cleveland, announces a $50,000 Fellowship award sponsored by Edwards LifeSciences for a graduate student doing research on shape memory materials such as Nitinol. The intent of the SMST Fellowship is to provide a current use gift to one or more deserving graduate students for the purpose of initiating interest in a unique path of research for shape memory materials such as Nitinol.
Each submission will be judged by the SMST Board on its ability to further the knowledge of shape memory materials. Each Fellowship request shall be no greater than a maximum of ten typed pages, double-spaced, Arial 12 font, justified pagination, including figures and tables, and should contain the applicant’s:

Criteria for submission of documents in support of a funding request for an SMST Fellowship stipend of up to $50,000 (USD) is presented below.
Fellowship Details:
The SMST Fellowship presentation cycle will match the SMST Conference cycle of every 24 months in correspondence with our bi-annual SMST international Conferences.
Fellowship Awards will be announced and presented at SMST Conferences and the recipient(s) will present his/her research results at the next SMST Conference.
Submissions will be accepted up to four months prior to the SMST Conference.
Fellowship recipients will be announced one month prior to the SMST Conference after receipt of submissions
SMST will pay one-half of the student’s travel costs to attend the appropriate SMST Conference, not to exceed $2500, at the conclusion of the Fellowship. All SMST Conference registration fees will be waived for the recipient(s) of the SMST Fellowship.
At the discretion of the SMST Board, there may be a division of the maximum amount of $50,000. For example, 1st place of $25,000, 2nd place of $15,000, and 3rd place of $10,000, should several submissions merit such a distribution.
Submissions will be limited to the first 50 received.
Submissions after the 50 maximum number of submissions is reached will be returned to the student(s).
Deadline to submit an application for the 2017 SMST Fellowship is January 9, 2017.
The recipient will be announced by mid-April 2017, and again at the 2017 SMST Conference in San Diego. The recipient will present his or her research results at the 2019 SMST Conference to be held in Constance, Germany.
