This year again, key thermal spray leaders were introduced to the TSS Hall of Fame to recognize their exceptional contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, management, and advancement of thermal spraying. The recipients of this most prestigious award are selected by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, and nominations are approved by the TSS Board. The new Hall of Fame inductees were recognized in a special awards session at ITSC 2016 in Shanghai.
Prof. Chuanxian Ding from the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was acknowledged for pioneering the science and technology of thermal spray in China, especially in the area of emerging applications, and for mentoring students and young professionals. Our second inductee was Dr. Seiji Kuroda from the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan. Seiji was recognized for his pioneering research on residual stress in thermal spray coatings, development of in-situ beam curvature techniques, in-flight particle diagnostics, and warm spray technology. Prof. Armelle Vardelle from Université de Limoges in France was selected for her exceptional contributions to understanding the role of plasma generation and plasma-particle interaction on coatings microstructure. Finally, Dr. Thomas A. Taylor from Praxair Surface Technologies was recognized for his significant contributions to new and novel thermal barrier coating architectures and rub-tolerant and MCrAlY coatings for gas and turbine engines.
These four leaders from three continents have dedicated a significant portion of their careers to the advancement of thermal spray, and made contributions that improved our understanding and use of thermal spray technologies.
In addition, I want also to recognize the exceptional work of Dr. Jeganathan Karthikeyan from ASB Industries over the last 20 years! I had the pleasure to present the TSS President’s Award to Karthi in June on the occasion of his retirement. We all appreciate his exemplary service to our Society in organizing successful topical events, participating in TSS Committees, and serving as Director of the TSS Board from 2008-2011.
Thanks to all awardees and to all of you who, by your dedication, time and energy, contribute to the growth of thermal spray engineering across the world.
