Advanced Metallographic Techniques
Learn basic and advanced metallographic techniques that will reveal the true microstructural characteristics of a wide range of materials. The theory and understanding of the proper selection of abrasives, lubricants, equipment, polishing cloths/pads and a basic understanding of chemomechanical polishing will be discussed. The course covers the preparation methods of most metals and alloys, composites, hard metals, ceramics and coatings.

Aluminum and Its Alloys
Aluminum is a widely used metal that is playing an increasingly dominant role in the green economy. Aluminum’s high strength to weight ratio, low cost, recycle ability, and other positive attributes are some of the reasons that aluminum is being adopted as a material of choice by weight conscious component engineers. This class uses hundreds of hands – on, real – world aluminum components and metallurgical samples to illustrate concepts in the text. Aluminum literature is also provided as a valuable resource for people working with aluminum and aluminum alloy products. Students are encouraged to bring questions and their real-world problems to class for discussion and resolution. This is the ideal class for someone who will be actively working with the many diverse aspects of aluminum technology.
Basics of Heat Treating
Heat treating is considered the least understood, but most integral part of the manufacturing processes. An efficient heat treating process reduces the overall manufacturing costs associated with energy use, scrap, re-work, and quality issues. Heat treating is critical for your business and industry.
Component Failure Analysis
This course focuses on the practical materials and processing knowledge necessary to perform failure analysis on these widely used component groups. The course materials and instruction will provide insight into the manufacturing of components, circumstances resulting in degradation, and diagnostic features for failure analysis and prevention.
