Women in Engineering Committee
We focus on providing women-specific programming including networking opportunities, guidance for mentoring, leadership, career development, and retention of women engineers.
Who We Are
Women in STEM-related careers often face unique challenges. To help address those issues, ASM International’s Women in Materials Engineering (WiME) Committee focuses on providing women-specific programming including networking opportunities, guidance for mentoring, leadership, career development, and retention of women engineers.
WiME Subcommittees
The Events Subcommittee works on networking events and organizes a special breakfast lecture at IMAT.
The Recognition and Promotion Subcommittee identifies and supports nomination of ASM women for technical awards, fellowship, and encourages leadership participation at the chapter and national level.
The Chapter Focus/Leadership Days Subcommittee is creating a presentation and guidebook about how chapters can provide mentoring and career development opportunities for young professionals.
The Career and Leadership Development Subcommittee is building an online forum for discussion and reference information relevant to issues facing women in engineering, as well as developing a webinar series.
The Retention Subcommittee is working on gathering statistical information to help identify why women leave engineering jobs at higher rates then men.

Girl Scouts Learn How to Be Materials Girls
Fifteen Girl Scouts traveled to the ASM dome to take part in demonstrations that explained materials property concepts and introduced them to engineering.

The scouts, who were between 7 to 11 years old, earned a Materials Girl patch by participating in the program. The day was organized by the ASM Women in Materials Engineering committee in collaboration with the Northeast Ohio Girl Scouts council.
