Aluminum and Its Alloys

Aluminum is a widely used metal that is playing an increasingly dominant role in the green economy. Aluminum’s high strength-to-weight ratio, low cost, recycling ability, and other positive attributes are some of the reasons that aluminum is being adopted as a material of choice by weight conscious component engineers. This class uses hundreds of hands-on, real-world aluminum components and metallurgical samples to illustrate concepts in the text. Aluminum literature is also provided as a valuable resource for people working with aluminum and aluminum alloy products. Students are encouraged to bring questions and their real-world problems to class for discussion and resolution. This is the ideal class for someone who will be actively working with the many diverse aspects of aluminum technology.

Corrosion

Corrosion occurs in all industries from automotive and aerospace to infrastructure, construction, petroleum, power, paper making, food processing, bio-engineering, and pharmaceuticals. Corrosion is costly, dangerous, wasteful, and unsightly. It can be predicted, controlled, and even avoided. This class presents an overview of the eight major corrosion processes and related corrosion monitoring, prediction and control mechanisms. The principles discussed are applicable to all metals. Emphasis is on practical applications of corrosion technology to industrial corrosion problems.

Principles of Failure Analysis, 3 Days

This lecture course is designed to provide the knowledge to bridge the gap between theory and practice of failure analysis. This course presents a very practical approach to failure analysis for those who are new to the field or those who want an update. It is also designed for technicians with the pre-requisites and those interested in understanding how knowledge of failure analysis can lead to better productivity. Causes of fractures are explained with diagrams of stress application and distribution. Many case histories of failures and their elimination are highlighted throughout the course.

Scanning Electron Microscopy

In collaboration with Zeiss, ASM presents this course on basic scanning electron microscopy (SEM) operation. Learners will complete the online course prior to attending onsite training at ASM Laboratoires. The online course material presents necessary theory and operating principles and imaging and analytical techniques.

Lab time will be held in small groups of 1-3 attendees in the ASM Microscopy Lab using the EVO LS15 SEM and a Bruker energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) for fast elemental mapping and inclusion analysis. Students are encouraged to bring their own samples.

Stainless Steels

Stainless steels have emerged as one of the more important man-made materials, designed for strength, corrosion resistance, and ease of fabrication. Continued growth in the use of stainless steels provides an incentive to understand their properties, processing, and response to various fabrication routes. This course provides the important facts to help master these alloys for a wide variety of uses.

Corrosion Prevention

Corrosion occurs in all industries from automotive and aerospace to infrastructure, construction, petroleum, power, paper making, food processing, bioengineering, and pharmaceuticals. Where a corrosion failure has occurred, economical and practicable measures for prevention of future failures of the same type are required.

Corrosion Testing and Monitoring

Corrosion testing and monitoring are powerful tools in the fight to control corrosion. Testing provides the necessary data for the evaluation and/ or selection of existing, alternative, or new materials in various environments. Monitoring allows workers to follow the effectiveness of a corrosion-control system and provides early warning when damaging conditions arise.

Types of Corrosion

In this self-guided digital course, students will learn – with the help of rich visuals, narrated animations, demonstration videos, and interactive quizzes – the major corrosion processes that are observed across all industries. This course also includes real world corrosion case studies.
