New quarterly total area shipments clocked in 8.6 percent higher than third quarter 2017 shipments.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\">\u201cSilicon shipment volumes remained at record levels during the third quarter,\u201d said Neil Weaver, chairman SEMI SMG and Director, Product Development and Applications Engineering of Shin Etsu Handotai America. \u201cSilicon shipments are mirroring this year\u2019s strong semiconductor unit growth in support of a growing and diversified electronics market during our stable economy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\">Silicon wafers are the fundamental building material for semiconductors, which in turn, are vital components of virtually all electronics goods, including computers, telecommunications products, and consumer electronics. The highly engineered thin round disks are produced in various diameters (from one inch to 12 inches) and serve as the substrate material on which most semiconductor devices, or chips, are fabricated.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\">All data cited in this release is inclusive of polished silicon wafers, including virgin test wafers and epitaxial silicon wafers, as well as non-polished silicon wafers shipped by the wafer manufacturers to the end-users.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\">The <span style=\"text-decoration:none\"><span style=\"text-underline:none\">Silicon Manufacturing Group<\/span><\/span> (SMG) is a sub-committee of the SEMI <span style=\"text-decoration:none\"><span style=\"text-underline:none\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none\"><span style=\"text-underline:none\">Electronic Materials Group<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> (EMG) and is open to SEMI members involved in manufacturing polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon or silicon wafers (e.g., as cut, polished, epi, etc.).
