Flexible Scheduling Program
Courses that are a part of ASM International’s Flexible Scheduling Program give students the flexibility to take select specialty ASM courses at a time that works best for them. When an interested student signs up for a Flexible Scheduling Course, they are added to a list comprised of other interested students. When the list has a sufficient number of interested students (usually 4-5), ASM will reach out to the students and the course instructor to schedule the course for a time that works best for everyone.

Advanced High Strength Steels
Based on the book with the same name, this course is a comprehensive review of the science, technology and applications of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS). Advanced High-Strength Steels: Science, Technology and Applications is included when taking this course. Learn about the types, microstructures, thermal processing, deformation, mechanisms, properties, performance, benefits, challenges, trends, sustainability, economics, applications and evolving grades of AHSS. The high strength and remarkable ductility of AHSS make them suitable for a variety of uses in the automotive, construction, aerospace, railway, marine and military applications.
Fundamentals of Non-Destructive Testing
With industry placing increasing emphasis on NDT for economic, environmental and safety reasons, it is more important than ever that NDT personnel have a through working knowledge of all types of NDT techniques and be familiar with the wide variety of equipment that is best used with each specific technique. This in-depth course covers all this basic information and goes much further, teaching class participants which types of testing should be done for numerous applications--and why, how to analyze NDT procedures, and how to interpret results. This technical and complex subject is presented in a way that makes it easy to comprehend in a relatively short time.
Introduction to Thermal Spray
Thermal spraying has evolved from a technology designed to be a cost effective method of repairing worn components and machined parts, to a process used to provide improved part performance and add longer life to components. As the thermal spray profession has changed, so has the need to ensure safe and consistent methods for thermal spray operators. This course was created by leaders in the Thermal Spray Society. They complied their knowledge and experience in a comprehensive, easy to understand course. You will have the opportunity to learn from experts in this field and ask questions that apply to your specific industry or business.
Metallurgy of Welding and Joining
Welding metallurgy is a complex subject because it requires knowledge of materials, welding processes, design, and inspection. Metallurgy of Welding and Joining provides an excellent review of welding processes, welding of materials ranging from carbon steel to specialized alloys, guidelines for designing weldments to facilitate welding, and testing and inspecting welds to meet performance requirements. To measure your retention of each lesson's materials and end-of -lesson test will be provided, in addition to an end of course examination.
Materials for use in the oilfield must meet a number of challenges including high design loads, extremely corrosive environments, fabrication requirements, and cost/supply issues. This introductory course in oilfield materials, processes, and corrosion will acquaint the student with the current state-of-the-art in oilfield materials technology. The course covers the materials and processing requirements for various types of oilfield equipment, ranging from drilling to production to facilities, and the materials strategies employed for successful operation. Oilfield corrosion mechanisms and preventative techniques are explained. Coverage of advanced applications includes enhanced oil recovery and subsea/offshore operations. The course concludes with a discussion of the failure analysis of oilfield equipment, featuring a number of fascinating case histories.
Scanning Electron Microscopy
This course is a practical introduction to Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). SEM is a common and often essential tool in the evaluation and analysis of materials. The course is designed for both beginning and intermediate SEM users, and offers a hands-on approach to electron microscopy that includes tips and tricks the student can use in his or her own laboratory. In addition to imaging detectors, SEMs are often equipped with instrumentation for analysis of X-ray signals generated by beam/sample interactions. Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) is the most common method to identify and quantify elements present in a bulk samples or small (micron-scale) particles and phases. A significant portion of the course is devoted to understanding the origin and interpretation of X-ray data by EDS.
Knowledge of superalloys is key to designing the critical components used in the most challenging applications. This course allows you to dive deep into this unique class of materials that exhibit superior mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and surface stability. You will focus on the nature, properties, and usage of metal alloys. The content for the Superalloys course will include materials, superalloy properties, corrosion behavior, a look towards the future of superalloys, and more.
Titanium and its alloys
Titanium occupies an important position in the family of metals because of its light weight and corrosion resistance. Its unique combination of physical, chemical and mechanical properties make titanium alloys attractive for aerospace and industrial applications.
Vacuum Heat Treating
This course provides the background and practical applications of vacuum furnace heat treating. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of vacuum furnaces and related system components. A complete understanding of vacuum measurement and vacuum pumping systems is needed to perform various vacuum heat treating processes and will be reviewed. You will leave with a practical understanding of vacuum technology as related to heat treating and it is a follow up to courses which cover the fundamental metallurgy of what happens when metals are heated and cooled. This course will include hands on instruction utilizing the ASM Laboratory Vacuum Furnace and include examples of real world heat treating cycles.
Welding Inspection and Quality Control
This course addresses all the aspects that are critical to understanding this demanding area; it contains the technical information that the personnel in this area must know to perform their jobs properly. It is also of practical use as a fundamental course for new personnel and for use as a state-of-the-art refresher for more experienced personnel and it is a valuable tool that helps management understand the responsibilities of the people they supervise. It is aimed at industries where welding must be performed in compliance with strict codes and standards.
