This course is a hands-on introduction to standard mechanical testing and the properties derived from those tests, together with a discussion of testing philosophy to determine suitability for service and suitability for manufacture. Standardized testing procedures (ASTM, SAE, AWWA, etc.) are discussed, including limitations of a test, why specific requirements are present in the test procedure, and interpretation of experimental results. There is discussion of how metallurgical variables can affect test results, and how microstructure can affect selection of a given testing procedure. (For example, hardness testing of wrought vs. cast material.) This course is taught at a level that requires some algebraic manipulation as well as the use of logarithms. Students are required to bring a scientific calculator.

ASM Handbook Volume 8 is included when taking this course.

REQUIRED PRE-REQUISITES

  • Some exposure to metallurgy and the correlation of mechanical properties to microstructure is helpful.
  • Mathematics background that includes exposure to algebra and the use of logarithms is recommended.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Select the appropriate Hardness Testing method for the sample geometry and material condition
  • Perform a variety of  standardized tension, torsion and impact tests to determine the mechanical properties
  • Interpret test data to calculate mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, Ultimate Tensile Strength, Offset Yield Strength and Ductility
