Practical interpretation is a "Hands-On" course. The microstructures, heat treatment and use of each group of alloys are presented in a lecture. The lecture is followed by viewing of actual structures on a projection screen. The features of the structures are pointed out and discussed. The students then examine the over 200 mounts at their microscope stations and compare them with an illustrated and annotated notebook of the structures. There are no required prerequisites, but the basic knowledge of sample preparation, heat treating or metallurgy will enhance the understanding of the presented material.
Students are encouraged to bring prepared metallographic specimens to the class for discussion.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
* Individuals who are required to interpret microstructures
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
* Utilize proper microstructure terminology
* Correlate structures to manufacturing processes and heat treatment
* Recognize martensite, pearlite, ferrite, bainite and other structures
1. Proper Terminology for Describing Microstructures
2. Optimizing the Images on the Metallograph
3. Iron/ Carbon Phase Diagram and TTT Diagram
4. Structures of Carbon and Alloy Steels as Produced by Heat Treatments
5. Structures of Stainless Steels and Heat Resisting Alloys
6. Microstructures of Titanium and Its Alloys
7. Structures of Aluminum Alloys, Cast and Wrought

Ms. Frauke Hogue FASM is a consultant metallographer in failure analysis. After graduating from the Lette Verein in Berlin, Germany, she came to the US and worked at Voi-Shan, Culver City, CA, an aerospace fastener manufacturing company. At Voi-Shan she developed training materials and quality control procedures, and also worked closely with heat treating and manufacturing. In 1981 Frauke started to consult for corporate clients and independent laboratories, especially SEAL Laboratories, Los Angeles. The work involves training programs and all aspects of metallography for failure analysis of a wide range of materials, including electronics. She received the ASM Distinguished Educator Award in 1996 and the Instructor of Merit Award in 1997. Frauke has been a member of IMS since 1987, on the board of directors since 2000 and a member of ASM International since 1967. Frauke has served as president for IMS and also IMECA (Independent Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Consultants of California).
