Stainless steels have emerged as one of the more important man-made materials, designed for strength, corrosion resistance, and ease of fabrication. Continued growth in the use of stainless steels provides an incentive to understand their properties, processing, and response to various fabrication routes. This course provides the important facts to help master these alloys for a wide variety of uses.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
- Process Engineers
- Maintenance Engineers
A basic knowledge of the mechanical properties of steels and at least a high school plus level of intelligent reasoning capacity.
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify the mechanical and physical properties of the different types and grades of stainless steel
- Select the best alloy for a specific application
- Troubleshoot problems due to corrosion failures
- Determine the best processes to use in the manufacture of stainless steel components

Wayne H. Samuelson is a graduate of Case Institute of Technology with a degree in metallurgy. He has spent the majority of his professional career on the thermal processing side of the industry, but has significant experience in failure analysis due to his extensive metallurgical background. His technical experience has been developed in the aerospace, rubber, automotive, and railroad industries, many of which required evaluation of welded components. He developed the Ferriticnitrocarburizing process used in GE washing machine transmissions. He designed a number of components and stop-off coatings for the heat treating industry and was awarded a US patent for his burner tip design. He has been published and presented numerous oral presentations at national conferences and is a life member of ASM International. Wayne has been an instructor of ASM's continuing education courses for 10 years.
