The ability to understand and control microstructure and properties in steels is critical for many industries and applications.This course deals specifically with the metallographic preparation of steels to reveal the microstructure accurately and provides a unique perspective and understanding for interpretation of steel microstructures. The class works as a team to build a reference notebook of steel microstructures and will perform heat treatment, metallography, hardness and micro-hardness testing. The class will learn to determine prior austenitic grain size, and understand the effect of cooling rate on the resulting microstructure.

Learn how to identify Austenite, Ferrite, Pearlite, Bainite (upper and lower), and Martensite (lath and plate) and understand the formation and growth of these microstructures.  The course includes video shot using a hot stage microscope at Lehigh University that shows several phase transformations common to steels in real time.

The Metallographer's Guide: Practices and Procedures for Irons and Steels is included when taking this course.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Reference notebook of representative microstructures completed by the class.
  • Analyze a wide range of ferrous microstructures: dual phase, carburized, decarburized, cold rolled, re-crystallized, and others.  
  • Relate microstructure to mechanical properties.
  • Understand the effect of cooling rates and carbon on the microstructure.
  • Determine the proper etchant.
