The ability to understand and control microstructure and properties in steels is critical for many industries and applications. This course deals specifically with the metallographic preparation of steels to reveal the microstructure accurately and provides a unique perspective and understanding for interpretation of steel microstructures. The class works as a team to build a reference notebook of steel microstructures and will perform heat treatment, metallography, hardness and micro-hardness testing. The class will learn to determine prior austenitic grain size, and understand the effect of cooling rate on the resulting microstructure.
Learn how to identify Austenite, Ferrite, Pearlite, Bainite (upper and lower), and Martensite (lath and plate) and understand the formation and growth of these microstructures. The course includes video shot using a hot stage microscope at Lehigh University that shows several phase transformations common to steels in real time.
The Metallographer's Guide: Practices and Procedures for Irons and Steels is included when taking this course.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
- Heat Treaters
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Reference notebook of representative microstructures completed by the class.
- Analyze a wide range of ferrous microstructures: dual phase, carburized, decarburized, cold rolled, re-crystallized, and others.
- Relate microstructure to mechanical properties.
- Understand the effect of cooling rates and carbon on the microstructure.
- Determine the proper etchant.
Continuing Education Units: 3.0
- Lecture on sample preparation.
- Lecture on how to identify ferrous microstructures.
- Heat treatment of samples on site.
- Understand the effect of cooling rate on hardness and microstructure.
- Student will have the opportunity to work on their own samples and work on the instructor's collection of steels.
Dr. Laura Moyer is the manager of Metallography, Light Optical Microscopy, and X-ray Diffraction in the Materials Science Department at Lehigh University. She has BS, MS, and PhD degrees (1999, 2002, and 2005, respectively) from Lehigh University. From 2005 until 2013, she was employed by Alcoa, Inc located in Dover, NJ, a world-class supplier of complex investment cast Ni and Co based superalloy airfoils for the aircraft engine and industrial gas turbine industries. As Technical Services Manager/Chief Metallurgist, she was the responsible party for all special process areas, including metallography, heat treatment, welding, chemical processing, and non-destructive testing. During her employment with Alcoa, she served as a voting member for Nadcap and held several customer certifications in metallography, heat treatment, and chemical processing.
In her current position at Lehigh University, Dr. Moyer is responsible for the metallography, light optical microscopy, heat treatment, and x-ray diffraction laboratories and also serves as laboratory instructor for several courses including MAT 10 Materials Laboratory, ENGR 5 Introduction to Engineering Practice, MAT 203 Materials Structure at the Nanoscale, and MAT 206 Processing and Properties of Metals.
