SECO/WARWICK to deliver furnace for hardening aviation steel

SECO/WARWICK , Meadville, Pa., will deliver a Vector vacuum furnace to one of the largest European machinery groups. The device will be used for hardening and tempering processes, and its design has been customized in order to meet the needs of a special and demanding process which is the hardening of aviation steel.

Cryoforging titanium to improve ductility

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif., has discovered a new and practical path toward manufacturing titanium with high ductile strength. The technique relies on low-temperature cryoforging to create nanotwinned titanium, which has 30% more ductility than normal titanium.

One minute mentor: Quenching and Tempering

The as-quenched properties of powder metallurgy steels depend on the cooling medium and the steel’s hardenability. Quenching in water, salt, brine, and water-based polymer solutions improves the rate of heat transfer, leading to a faster quench. However, in many cases, it accelerates corrosion due to the residual quenchant trapped in surface pores.
