In the past, atmospheric furnaces were used quite often for heat treatment of tool steels. Due to the improved furnace technology of vacuum furnaces and their increased distribution in the market, the percentage of tools heat treated in atmospheric furnaces has fallen significantly over the last 20 to 30 years.

A University of Michigan-led team of engineers and software developers developed a new beta version of tomviz, an open-source 3D data visualization tool software that connects directly to an electron microscope, enabling researchers to see and manipulate 3D visualizations of nanomaterials in real time, and is already used by tens of thousands of researchers.
Continue readingOne Minute Mentor:Salt bath hardening line for high-speed steels
Tools that are heat treated in molten salt baths are heated up much more rapidly than by convection or radiation, thereby heat treating times are significantly shortened. The molten salt provides a ready source of heat and maintains the rate of heating necessary to reach equilibrium with the rate of heat absorption.
Continue readingMetal reformation at nanometer scales
Massachusetts Institute of Technology has published a new study that shows what happens when crystalline grains in metals reform at nanometer scales, improving metal properties. This includes recrystallization, in which the metal is deformed and heated.
