One Minute Mentor: Equipment for Forging

The forge quenching process requires that quenching equipment be placed as closely as possible to the equipment used in the forging stage. Since the early 1960s, various direct-forge and quench equipment has been installed in this manner, thus enabling the use of carbon steels, which have good hardenability from grain growth and high dislocation density from the thermomechanical deformation performed during hot forging.

Nitrex installs a 5-in-1-turnkey nitriding system in Turkey

Nitrex, Quebec, has installed of a nitriding system that combines five Nitreg technologies with application know-how for processing a variety of components for electromechanical systems and actuating mechanisms used in aviation, land, and sea vehicles.

Harper International selected for thermal purification of natural graphite

Harper International, Buffalo, has beem chosen by Westwater Resources, Inc. to conduct engineering scaleup and front-end engineering design for production scale thermal purification as part of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) on the Coosa Graphite Project located in Alabama.

Constellium developing aluminum-lithium alloys for NASA

Constellium, Paris, is developing an aluminum-lithium alloy solution, Airware®, that will be used for NASA’s Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, for missions that will ultimately send humans farther into deep space than ever before. Airware’s inherent low density, high-specific stiffness, strength and excellent mechanical properties provide the high-performance characteristics required during the demanding launch and landing phases.

Lindberg ships two gas-fired furnaces to the manufacturing Industry

Lindberg, Michigan, announced the shipment of two gas-fired hardening and tempering furnaces to the manufacturing industry. These large-capacity box furnaces will be used for the normalizing, austenitizing, and tempering of forged components.

One Minute Mentor: Typical applications of micro alloyed steels for automotive components

Micro alloyed steels are machined and hardened to provide necessary machinability, strength, fatigue, and wear properties after forging and direct heat treatment. The selection of an appropriate steel grade is very important in the fabrication of crankshafts.
