\r\n\tWhat is Heat Treating?<\/h1>\r\n

\r\n\t\"\"The Heart Of Industry<\/strong>
\r\n\tPractically nothing can be manufactured without heat treating, a process in which metal is heated and cooled under tight controls to improve its properties, performance and durability.
\r\n\t
\r\n\tHeat treating can soften metal, to improve formability. It can make parts harder, to improve strength. It can put a hard surface on relatively soft components, to increase abrasion resistance. It can create a corrosion-resistant skin, to protect parts that would otherwise corrode. And, it can toughen brittle products.
\r\n\t
\r\n\tHeat treated parts are essential to the operation of automobiles, aircraft, spacecraft, computers and heavy equipment of every kind. Saws, axes, cutting tools, bearings, gears, axles, fasteners, camshafts and crankshafts all depend on heat treating.
\r\n\t
\r\n\tHTS proudly acknowledges the role of heat treaters in improving everyday living for all of us.
\r\n\t
\r\n\tThe Basics of Heat Treating<\/strong>
\r\n\tAlthough iron and steel account for the vast majority of heat treated materials, alloys of aluminum, copper, magnesium, nickel and titanium may also be heat treated.
\r\n\t
\r\n\tHeat treating processes require three basic steps:<\/p>\r\n

    \r\n\t
  1. \r\n\t\t

    \r\n\t\t\tHeating to a specified temperature<\/p>\r\n\t<\/li>\r\n\t

  2. \r\n\t\t

    \r\n\t\t\tHolding at that temperature for the appropriate amount of time<\/p>\r\n\t<\/li>\r\n\t

  3. \r\n\t\t

    \r\n\t\t\tCooling according to prescribed methods<\/p>\r\n\t<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n

    \r\n\tTemperatures may range as high as 2400\u00b0F and time at temperature may vary from a few seconds to as many as 60 hours or more.
    \r\n\t
    \r\n\tSome materials are cooled slowly in the furnace, but others must be cooled quickly, or quenched. Certain cryogenic processes require treatment at -120\u00b0F or lower. Quenching media include water, brine, oils, polymer solutions, molten salts, molten metals and gases. Each has specific characteristics that make it ideal for certain applications. However, 90 percent of parts are quenched in water, oil, gases or polymers.
    \r\n\t
    \r\n\tThe Value Of Heat Treating<\/strong>
    \r\n\tHeat treating adds about $15 billion per year in value to metal products by imparting specific properties that are required if parts are to function successfully.
    \r\n\t
    \r\n\tIt is very closely linked to the manufacture of steel products: about 80 percent of heat treated parts are made of steel. These include steel mill output such as bar and tube, as well as parts that have been cast, forged, welded, machined, rolled, stamped, drawn or extruded.
    \r\n\t
    \r\n\tIt is also a vital step in the manufacture of nonferrous products. For example, aluminum alloy automotive castings are heat treated to improve hardness and strength; brass and bronze items are heat treated to increase strength and prevent cracking; titanium alloy structures are heat treated to improve strength at high temperatures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Heat Treating Terminology<\/strong><\/p>

    Like any specialized field, heat treaters have their own jargon and terminology that may be difficult to navigate.\u00a0 Learning the correct terms can be particularly challenging as we communicate across several languages.\u00a0 The International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE) has initiated a project to translate common (and perhaps not-so-common) heat treating terms.\u00a0 You can find the ever-growing Heat Treaters Glossary and Translator here:<\/p>
