The Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Alliance (SMIA), led by the Rochester Institute of Technology, has been selected to lead the REMADE Institute, where REMADE stands for \u201cReducing Embodied-energy And Decreasing Emissions\u201d in materials manufacturing. REMADE is now soliciting and will select project proposals that develop state-of-the-art technologies that enable U.S. manufacturers to increase the recovery, reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling of metals, polymers, fibers, and e-waste, and advance the goals of the Institute. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The total investment will be approximately $24 million with 50% in REMADE funding and 50% awardee cost-share. The REMADE Institute is one of 13 national research consortiums that comprise the \u201cManufacturing USA\u201d federal initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nabil Nasr, associate provost and director of RIT\u2019s Golisano Institute for Sustainability, will serve as chairman and chief executive officer of SMIA and the REMADE initiative. Mr. Nasr will lead this consortium consisting of 26 universities, 44 companies, seven national labs, and 26 industry trade associations and foundations. The SMIA headquarters will be located in the Rochester region in a facility yet to be determined. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Institute will be organized as a set of technology nodes and \u201ctestbeds,\u201d or labs that will support the nodes, with expertise pulled in from consortium partners. RIT will lead the Remanufacturing and Reuse \u201cnode\u201d and two of the institute\u2019s testbeds. <\/span><\/p>\n
