{"id":11272,"date":"2020-04-03T11:39:40","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T11:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.asminternational.org\/hts-new\/asb-industries-akron-u-cold-spray-titanium-and-aluminum-layers-to-protect-magnesium\/"},"modified":"2023-02-23T22:45:10","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T22:45:10","slug":"asb-industries-akron-u-cold-spray-titanium-and-aluminum-layers-to-protect-magnesium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asminternational.org\/hts\/asb-industries-akron-u-cold-spray-titanium-and-aluminum-layers-to-protect-magnesium\/","title":{"rendered":"ASB Industries and universities develop cold-spray titanium\/aluminum  to protect magnesium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\">Engineers from ASB Industries, the University of Akron, and the University of Nevada have collaborated to develop double-layer coatings on magnesium.&nbsp;Current cold-sprayed (with nitrogen as propellant gas) commercially pure aluminum coatings on magnesium alloys lack acceptable hardness and wear resistance, and are highly susceptible to localized corrosion in chloride-containing solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\">Hence, a commercially pure \u03b1-Ti layer with high passivation propensity (with about 1293.05mV vs. SCE trans-passive potential), hardness, and low wear rate was applied on a CP-aluminum-coated magnesium alloy. The titanium layer deeply penetrated into the aluminum layer with heavy deformation. This was accompanied by noticeable densification of the softer aluminum underlayer by hard titanium particles with high kinetic energy (hammering effect). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\">The titanium layer raised micro-hardness (HV<sub>0.025<\/sub>) from 56.43 (CP-Al coated Mg alloy) to 263.03 for Ti\/Al coated Mg alloy.
