{"id":11353,"date":"2018-04-12T08:02:13","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T08:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.asminternational.org\/hts-new\/japanese-researchers-discover-16-million-tons-of-rare-earth-deposits-in-deep-sea-mud\/"},"modified":"2023-02-23T22:45:43","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T22:45:43","slug":"japanese-researchers-discover-16-million-tons-of-rare-earth-deposits-in-deep-sea-mud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asminternational.org\/hts\/japanese-researchers-discover-16-million-tons-of-rare-earth-deposits-in-deep-sea-mud\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese researchers discover 16 million tons of rare-earth deposits in deep-sea mud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span>Several Japanese universities, research groups, and government agencies published an article in the April 10 edition of the online journal <i>Scientific Reports <\/i>describing results of their analysis of the rare-earth metals they discovered in deep-sea mud near Japan back in 2013. <\/span><span><span>The research team, led by Yutaro Takaya, an instructor at Waseda University, and Professor Yasuhiro Kato of the University of Tokyo, published detailed findings on the size and content of the deposits for the first time in an article t<\/span><\/span><span>itled \u201cThe tremendous potential of deep-sea mud as a source of rare-earth elements.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The researchers claim to <\/span><span><span>have found more than 16 million tons of rare-earth deposits, equivalent to a few hundred years of global consumption, under the seabed near the island of Minami-Torishima, about 1200 miles southeast of Tokyo.
