The microstructure thus is converted to ferrite, and the excess carbon is deposited on the existing nodules (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\">Fig. 3a<span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"font-variant-ligatures:normal; text-align:start; -webkit-text-stroke-width:0px\"><span style=\"font-variant-caps:normal\"><span style=\"orphans:2\"><span style=\"widows:2\"><span style=\"text-decoration-style:initial\"><span style=\"text-decoration-color:initial\"><span style=\"float:none\"><span style=\"word-spacing:0px\">). This treatment produces ASTM grade 60-40-18. Amounts of manganese, phosphorus, and alloying elements such as chromium and molybdenum should be as low as possible for superior machinability, because these elements retard the annealing process.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:.0001pt\"><span style=\"background:white\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"color:black\">For subcritial anneal, heat and hold at 705 to 720 \u00b0C (1300 to 1330 \u00b0F), for one hour per inch of section. Furnace cool at 55 \u00b0C\/h (100 \u00b0F\/h) to 345 \u00b0C (650 \u00b0F). Air cool. &nbsp; The Figure shows the influence of subcritical annealing at 705 \u00b0C (1300 \u00b0F) for various periods of time on the hardness of four ductile irons.
