Both are from the Colorado School of Mines. Fluxtrol presented the two awards during the 2018 ASM Heat Treating Society Thermal Processing in Motion Conference in June.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Dr. Cryderman won for excellence in academic research in the field of thermal processing of steel. His <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span>web page includes the following information about his research:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201c<\/span><\/span><span><span><span>My main interests are in utilizing alloy design and advanced thermomechanical processing techniques to achieve microstructures in medium-carbon to high-carbon steels that will provide a benefit to the performance of steel parts in highly stressed applications subjected to fatigue and impact loads. I am focusing on the influences of second phase precipitates, prior austenite grain size, and prior austenite grain boundary strength on fatigue induced fractures.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><span>Ms. Judge won for research deemed by judges to be of extraordinary quality and impact to the field of thermal processing. Ms. Judge, Dr. John G. Speer, and Prof. Amy J. Clarke, all of the Colorado School of Mines, presented \u201cMechanical Properties of 4340 Steel Subjected to Short-Time Tempering within the Tempered Martensite Embrittlement Regime,\u201d at the 2018 ASM Heat Treating Society Thermal Processing in Motion Conference.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><b><span>Here is the abstract: <\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span><span><span><span>The influence of short-time tempering on mechanical properties of 4340 steel within the tempered martensite embrittlement (TME) regime was examined. The Hollomon-Jaffe tempering parameter was used to develop tempering treatments to compare short-time and conventional tempering conditions at an equivalent hardness. This work confirms the applicability of the Hollomon-Jaffe tempering parameter in predicting equivalent hardness values for various time-temperature combinations. However, variation in toughness and strength was observed at equivalent hardness values; therefore, calling into question the use of hardness as a universal metric to describe time temperature equivalency.
