UltraGlow ion nitriding based on glow discharge technology
February 16, 2016
Source:
Advanced Heat Treat Corp., Waterloo, Iowa, offers UltraGlow ion nitriding, a case-hardening treatment in which glow discharge technology introduces nitrogen ions to the surface of a metal for diffusion into the part.
This process is carried out in a vacuum vessel in which a high-voltage electrical charge forms a plasma, causing nitrogen ions to accelerate and impinge on the metal. When the nitrogen ions bombard the part, they heat up the metal, clean the surface, and cause nitrogen to be absorbed into the surface. This process is sometimes called ion nitrocarburizing or plasma ferritic nitrocarburizing.
Plasma nitriding is widely used to generate a hard case on engineering surfaces for enhanced performance of many tribological components. Recently this process has found wider applications in advanced surfaces in aerospace, electronics and power systems for corrosion protection. In addition, plasma nitrided surfaces are being investigated for fuel cells and human implants.
UltraGlow's case hardening process can create a controlled white layer or compound zone that reduces susceptibility to corrosion or rust. Surface lubricity can be enhanced tenfold, and the process improves overall resistance to wear and tear of moving parts within another assembly.
No toxic salts or gases are used in the manufacturing process. Therefore, it's a safe and clean process that will be around for a lifetime.
The working parameters of Advanced Heat Treat Corp.'s ion nitriding equipment are very large, up to 160 inches in diameter, 360 inches in length, and up to 60,000 pounds in weight.

Tribogenics XRF analyzer is based on a cartridge system instead of glass X-ray tube
Source:
Tribogenics, Los Angeles, Calif., introduces the Watson XRF analyzer, in which the company says conventional glass X-ray tubes are replaced with an X-Change cartridge system that makes changing cartridges "as easy as changing the ink in an inkjet printer." It enables quick and accurate identification of 32 elements, and can reportedly identify most of the popular aluminum alloys in less than twenty seconds.
Watson software is said to be able to identify more than 436 metal alloys and provide identification and analysis of more than 32 of the most common elements used in tens of thousands of alloy grades.
Watson uses the Android operating system and supports the mobile user interface concepts and wireless communication interfaces. This permits a wide range of personnel, with varying levels of skill and knowledge, to quickly and accurately use the Watson for all types of applications that can use hand-held XRF technology. The software supports configuring the XRF instrument and performs automatic internal calibration without the need for a trained technician or carrying around bulky calibration discs.
It takes advantage of the latest in smartphone design and software, and costs $10,000. An intuitive interface means that it's easy for anyone to use without any special training. Watson is Wi-Fi enabled for automatic software updates, and comes with integrated market pricing, keeping users current on all local alloy market prices.
