Nucor Corp., Charlotte, N.C., has agreed to acquire St. Louis Cold Drawn Inc., a manufacturer of cold-drawn rounds, hexagons, squares, and special sections that mainly serves the United States and Mexico automotive and industrial markets.

"This acquisition fits with our planned growth strategy by expanding Nucor's position as the market leader in cold finished bar products. It also creates synergies with our bar mills by providing an additional channel to market for the special bar quality (SBQ) products we produce," said John Ferriola, Nucor Chairman, CEO ,and President. "The acquisition of St. Louis Cold Drawn complements our long-term strategy to profitably grow our value-added product portfolio."

St. Louis Cold Drawn employs 125 people and has two manufacturing locations, one in St. Louis, Missouri, and the other in Monterrey, Mexico, that have a combined annual capacity of 200,000 tons. The addition of these facilities will increase the total capacity of Nucor's cold finished bar and wire facilities to more than 1.1 million tons annually and also will help advance its goal of growing sales to automotive customers.

Nucor and its affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the United States and Canada.  Products include carbon and alloy steel -- in bars, beams, sheet and plate; hollow structural section tubing; electrical conduit; steel piling; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; steel grating; and wire and wire mesh.

Through the David J. Joseph Company, Nucor also brokers ferrous and nonferrous metals, pig iron and HBI/DRI; supplies ferro-alloys; and processes ferrous and nonferrous scrap. Nucor is North America's largest recycler.

MTS installs Echo remote lab monitoring technology in Brazilian research institute

May 24, 2017

MTS Systems Corp., Eden Prairie, Minn., has completed the installation of the MTS Echo remote lab monitoring technology in the Civil Engineering Structural and Materials Laboratory at Rio de Janeiro's Pontificia Universidade Católica (PUC-Rio).

The University deployed MTS Echo Intelligent Lab to help improve lab efficiency. Under the supervision of Dr. Flavio de Andrade Silva, PUC-Rio contracts with many of Brazil's foremost engineering companies to design and conduct a wide array of mechanical tests to better understand the performance and durability characteristics of construction materials, techniques, and structures.

Now with the latest technology from MTS incorporated into the laboratory, the staff and students have far greater visibility to ongoing test system performance and overall system health. Authorized personnel can remotely access detailed information about their test systems from an Android or iOS-compatible device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.). The university is consequently able to maximize testing efficiency, and can preemptively identify equipment problems that could delay testing results.

Facing more demanding schedules, many modern test facilities are often expected to run around the clock, and unscheduled disruptions can affect multiple projects. Through Echo Equipment Monitoring, MTS addresses the growing need to improve productivity by providing real-time remote access to test status and equipment performance data. In addition, the Echo Health Monitoring functionality helps extend test system service life, enabling early detection and remedy of potential issues before they damage equipment or interrupt tests.

"There is a longstanding and deep-rooted cooperative relationship between PUC-Rio and MTS," says Dr. Flavio de Andrade Silva of PUC-Rio's Civil Engineering Department. "With the implementation of the Echo solution, we're able to know what is happening in the lab even when we are not there, giving us the assurance that we are operating efficiently."

Steel Dynamics invests $28 million to expand rolling capacity at its Roanoke facility

February 6, 2017

Steel Dynamics, Fort Wayne, Ind., recently invested $28 million for a reheating furnace and a new finishing area in its Roanoke Bar Division to increase rolling capacity from the current 500,000 tons to over 600,000 tons per year.

"With the addition of this equipment, which allows for multi-strand slitting and rebar finishing, we expect the added product diversification and our existing highly competitive cost structure to allow us to quickly grow market share. Additionally, we will be one of the largest independent rebar suppliers without our own rebar fabricating business, which we believe will be a positive for our new customer base," said Joe Crawford, Vice President and Roanoke Bar Division General Manager.

The supply package is comprised of a pusher-type high capacity reheating furnace designed to process 140 tons of billets per hour. The plan is to roll the billets into light sections and reinforcing bars from sizes #4 to #11, as well as corresponding round bars. The objective of the new reheating furnace is not only to increase productivity, but also to significantly improve energy efficiency, with the adoption of a smart combustion management system.

After the upgrade, the Roanoke Bar Division expects to increase production of rebar to over 200,000 tons per year. Commissioning is expected to commence at the end of 2017.

Outokumpu offers full range of stainless steel rebar products for infrastructure

Outokumpu Oy, Sweden, announces that after expanding its stainless rebar capabilities in the United States, the company is able to offer a full range of stainless steel rebar products, including coil, cut-to-length, and bent shapes. The facility in Richburg, South Carolina, has unique capabilities to cover a full range of rebar dimensions between sizes #3 and #8 (from 6 mm to 25.4 mm), and lengths up to 60 feet, and offers short lead times for the North American market.

"With multiple landmark projects, Outokumpu has a strong reputation in the stainless steel rebar market globally," says Bob Beatty, head of Outokumpu Stainless Bar USA. "From our South Carolina facilities we are able to offer fully domestically produced stainless rebar for customers in the United States and Canada. We look forward working with leading construction-industry partners to bring our stainless rebar products to the market."

Usage of stainless steel rebar is growing rapidly across North America, as it delivers significant lifetime savings to infrastructure owners. Stainless rebar has been successful in highly demanding structures, including bridges and other road infrastructure, which show no signs of deterioration after decades of service. Stainless steel does not rely on concrete for its corrosion protection and is a straightforward solution when concrete is subject to the ingress of chlorides from either marine environments or de-icing salts.

Outokumpu has a century of experience in creating efficient, long-lasting, and recyclable stainless steels. Its global offerings include quality-critical long products for buildings and infrastructures. Its Long Products sites are located in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden.
