Seco-Warwick case-hardening system reduces distortion in gears

October 28, 2015

Seco Warwick, Meadville, Pa., introduces UniCase Master, a single flow, precision case-hardening system said to reduce distortion in gears; and the ZeroFlow gas nitriding process.  ZeroFlow is an ammonia-only nitriding process characterized by extremely low gas consumption and low emission of post-process gases. It features a simpler control system and reportedly delivers even better precision than processes with double-component atmospheres.

UniCase Master is said to offer not only a step forward in minimizing production cost and maximizing reliability, but also a real breakthrough in quality and repeatability in case hardening of gears by high-pressure gas quenching. It was created in collaboration with Professor Leszek Małdziński from the Institute of Work Machines and Vehicles of the Technical University in Poznan as a new method of controlled gas nitriding and nitrocarburizing.

The ZeroFlow method is based on performing the nitriding process in a single-component atmosphere: raw ammonia (NH3). The adjustment of nitriding atmosphere chemical composition and therefore control of nitriding potential Kn is performed only by a temporary stop and reactivation of NH3 feeding into the furnace.

Constellium launches Aeral aluminum for aerosol cans

Source:

Constellium N.V., Amsterdam, has launched Aeral, an aluminum solution designed for making aerosol containers by the "drawn and ironed" technology currently used to produce beverage cans. Aeral enables a minimum of 30% weight savings versus traditional impact-extruded containers, all while maintaining the same level of performance in terms of ductility and resistance to pressure.

According to the company, Aeral is based on an alloy that can be used efficiently throughout the D&I canmaking process, including the necking operation, while meeting the pressure resistance and aesthetic requirements of cosmetics companies.

Aeral is said to demonstrate Constellium's commitment to sustainability and the development of innovative, lighter, and infinitely recyclable solutions.  It was developed through a combination of cutting-edge research at C-TEC, Constellium's world-class technology center in Voreppe, France, and strong industrial capabilities at the company's rolling mill in Neuf-Brisach, France, which has long experience in manufacturing light-weighting products, including beverage cans. Constellium is already in advanced discussions with some key players in the market.

Fireworks at Heat Treat Social Event Causes an International Stir

October 27, 2015

MATERIALS PARK, OH – October 27, 2015 – Last week at Heat Treat 2015, the ASM Heat Treating Society rolled out their new social event, "The Heat Is On", which included a fireworks display that delighted guests and locals alike.

The "Heat Is On" networking event took place on Wednesday evening at the Port of Detroit facility right on the Detroit River.  The 350+ attendees were greeted with flame twirlers as they arrived at the venue, and throughout the evening they enjoyed delicious Detroit-style food, hand rolled cigars, an open bar that included some great local craft beers, and a local band. The evening was capped off by an amazing surprise fireworks display on the water, which was sponsored by Surface Combustion to celebrate their 100th anniversary. The Detroit River is considered international waters as well as a major shipping lane, so guests and locals from Detroit and Windsor were surprised by the seemingly impromptu show.

The "mystery" fireworks caused quite a stir on social media and in local news outlets on Wednesday night. Detroit and Windsor residents took to social media to ask who was behind this unexpected display on international waters, while several news outlets in Windsor and Detroit picked up the story. ASM solved the mystery by claiming responsibility on Thursday afternoon.

Kelly Thomas, Senior Manager, Events at ASM International, was pleased at the outcome of the first Heat Treat social event. "We set the bar high in 2015 and HTS will continue to grow the programming, exposition and networking events to remain the leaders in the industry. To find out what we have planned next, you will have to join us at Heat Treat 2017!"

The next Heat Treat event will take place on October 24-26, 2017 in Columbus, Ohio.

Norsk Titanium orders three more machines to build titanium parts by Rapid Plasma Deposition

Source:

Norsk Titanium USA, New York, has contracted with Norway-based Tronrud Engineering AS to produce three additive manufacturing machines to support higher-than-forecast demand for aerospace-grade titanium components made by its patented Rapid Plasma Deposition process. The company has received orders from a number of the world's leading commercial and Aerospace and Defense (A&D) manufacturers.

Norsk says that its proprietary plasma arc Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) technology is the ultimate in 3D additive printing. Titanium wire is melted in a cloud of argon gas and precisely and rapidly built up in layers to a near-net-shape (up to 80% complete) that requires very little finish machining. Production cost is 50% to 75% less than legacy forging and billet manufacturing techniques.

"We are pleased to contract with Tronrud to build our exclusive technology for the production of aerospace-grade titanium structures," said NTi President & Chief Executive Officer Warren M. Boley, Jr. "These 3D additive manufacturing machines will further boost our customer response time and expand manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand for titanium components from the global aerospace industry."

Mr. Boley, Former President of Aerojet Rocketdyne, took the helm of NTi in July of this year to oversee the transformation of the company's manufacturing process to deliver titanium parts for A&D applications, while leading the groundbreaking program to establish the world's first industrial-scale 3D additive manufacturing facility in the United States. The contract with Tronrud represents one of NTi's key supplier partnerships aimed at supporting the company's rapid expansion plans.
