Nanovea automated indentation technology eliminates user error
Source:
Nanovea, Irvine, Calif., announces the M3 hardness tester with automated indentation technology. It combines automated controlled load and depth, nano- through micro-range (ASTM E2546), and a competitive price to compete in the $20K market. The indentation method has been fully automated, with no need to visually observe the indent. This eliminates user error or problems with image recognition software that may have issues with material color and texture.
The M3 introduces an entirely new user capability within this price range, providing affordable access to quick and easy nanoindentation results under the ASTM standard. It offers next- generation technology to replace the traditional Visual Micro Vickers Hardness Testers that have not changed in more than 15 years. Also, this new technology can achieve lower load and will work on thin coatings and all ranges of materials including ceramics, polymers, metals and others.
The fully automated system has a touch screen start that gives automatic average of multiple measurements in minutes. The unit is compact and fully contained with only one standard electrical cable to connect. Input function includes load, creep time, and material type. Output function includes hardness, Young's modulus, and creep depth.

Solar Atmospheres heat treats titanium manifold for Orion spacecraft
January 7, 2015
Source:
Solar Atmospheres of Western Pennsylvania, Hermitage, Pa., announces that it vacuum heat-treated the titanium manifold in the Launch Abort System of the NASA Orion spacecraft launched in December. The large manifold housing, made of Ti6AI4V, is designed to rapidly propel astronauts away from the main rocket in case of a catastrophic explosion or any other unexpected event. Once fired, the LAS will accelerate the astronauts away from the main rocket at forces up to 10 to 15 g's.
"The welded component needed to be homogenously treated to ensure peak performance in the event the LAS would be needed," says Michael Johnson, Sales Manager. "Precise temperature monitoring of the part and uniformity of the furnace was the easy part. The challenging part was avoiding a eutectic reaction with the furnace tooling, while minimizing distortion. At the end of the day, both Solar and its customer had a process that proved to be successful on the prototype and the three additional manifolds that followed."

Ajax Tocco temper ovens heat treat automotive constant-velocity joints
Source:
Ajax Tocco Magnethermic Corp., Warren, Ohio, has supplied three temper ovens to a major automotive parts manufacturer in Mexico for the tempering of CV joints. Each oven is designed for a maximum operating temperature of 250°C with uniformity of +/- 5°C. The continuous belt, variable-speed conveyor carries more than 240 parts per hour through the oven and cooler system, which are robot loaded and manually unloaded.
The Ajax oven design offers a small footprint, which is achieved through a rapid heat-up and uniform heat distribution in the oven. A very efficient cooler brings parts to a low cool-down temperature in a compact chamber for manual handling at the unload station.
Direct gas-fired burners are used as the heat source, with the ATM design providing a wide range turn-down capability to conserve fuel while maintaining process chamber uniformity. The oven also utilizes a unique ductwork design proven to be highly effective in heat-treat processes.
Each oven is controlled with a PLC and touch screen, which includes a programmed system shut-down once the proper cool-down temperature has been achieved.
Ajax Tocco Magnethermic, a subsidiary of Park-Ohio Holdings Corporation®, designs and manufactures world class induction heating and melting equipment for various industries and applications throughout the world. It provides a range of services including laboratory process development, preventive maintenance, equipment repair and parts, coil repair facilities, and installation services.

Vac Aero high-pressure quench vacuum furnace has high heating rates, tight uniformity
Source:
Vac Aero, Burlington, Ontario, has sold a VAH4848 HV-6 high-pressure quench vacuum furnace to a manufacturer and integrator of high performance aerospace systems and components. The furnace is designed to have rapid heating rates while maintaining tight uniformity at high vacuum levels, and is equipped with a gas-quench system capable of quench pressures up to six bar. An external recirculating inert gas quenching system distributes quench gas through circumferentially located internal nozzles for rapid, uniform cooling of the work load.
The furnace features a 36 x 30 x 48-inch carbon hot zone, with a heavy duty hearth designed to support a uniformly distributed load of 2500 lb. Bottom-loading or front-loading vacuum brazing and heat treating furnaces are designed to have rapid heating rates to very uniform temperatures at high vacuum levels. They are equipped with a gas quench system capable of quickly cooling the workload from processing temperatures, at quench pressures from 1.5, 2, 6, to 10 bar, depending on the specifications of each individual furnace.
Furnaces are designed for operating between 1000°F and 2400°F, depending on the specifications of each individual furnace. Hot zone heating Elements are made of curved graphite, lanthanated molybdenum (MoLa) strip, or molybdenum strip, depending on the specifications of each individual furnace.
Hot zones feature unitized construction for easy removal and maintenance. The lightweight design's low thermal mass enables faster quenching and longer life. The heat shield package consists of one layer of 0.020-in. thick lanthanated molybdenum sheet backed by one layer of 0.010-in. thick molybdenum sheet, and three layers of 0.014-in. stainless steel sheet. The heat shield package is supported by a 14 gauge stainless steel assembly that uniformly distributes the quenching gas to the workload.

Lucifer Furnaces offers furnace with separate hardening and tempering chambers
Source:
Lucifer Furnaces, Warrington, Pa., offers Red Devil Model RD8-KHE24, a space saving dual chamber unit with working dimensions of 12 x 14 x 24 inches in both upper and lower chambers. The upper hardening chamber reaches 2200°F, while the lower tempering oven heats to 1200°F. Both chambers are lined with a multilayered 4.5-inch combination of lightweight firebrick hotface insulation and mineral wool backup insulation for energy efficient operation.
The firebrick is precision dry fit inside the chamber with staggered seams for reduced heat loss while allowing for thermal expansion. All refractory can be easily replaced through the front opening of the chamber.
Both chambers contain heating elements composed of coiled heavy gauge wire of low watt density mounted in easy-to-replace side wall panels. The lower chamber has a rear-mounted fan for uniform circulation of heat. Hearth plates in both chambers support the workload and protect floor brick. Chambers are controlled separately by Honeywell digital time proportioning controllers; an optional over-temperature safety system is installed on the upper chamber.
The company has delivered a Red Devil Series furnace to Precision Solutions, a machine shop in Richmond, Utah, that specializes in custom tooling. Manager Bob Jones chose a Lucifer Furnace to bring his heat treating in-house to save time when heating a variety of tool steels.
