Soft magnetic steel combines low coercivity with high permeability and resistivity

Carpenter Technology Corp., Wyomissing, Pa., has developed Cartech Hypocore, a new soft magnetic steel that offers performance benefits between those found in Carpenter's high-performance Hipercore family of high-cobalt magnetic alloys, and those of commercial silicon-based alloys.

This new electrical steel can provide lower core loss and higher induction than the Hiperco alloys, even at a low applied magnetic field. Hypocore can also be used at higher frequencies with less heat generation. It exhibits a unique combination of properties, such as low coercivity, high permeability, and high electrical resistivity, which makes motors and generators operate more efficiently. This new material offers potential benefits to next-generation electrical machines, as well as to electromagnetic devices such as laminations or assembled cores for small machines where higher efficiency and smaller size are important.

Initial manufacturing is already underway, and material is available upon request at different sheet thicknesses (from 0.005 to 0.025 in.) for testing and prototyping purposes. Carpenter can also support commercial orders. Please call 610-208-2000 for additional information.

Wisconsin Oven Corp., East Troy, Mich., has shipped a gas-fired walk-in batch oven to an industrial transformer supplier for baking out transformers. The customer opted to add the turn-key installation package, which includes everything from unloading the equipment to commissioning the equipment into operation. The walk-in industrial oven has a maximum temperature rating of 300°F and work chamber of 10 x 10 x 10 feet. The recirculation system was designed with combination airflow to maximize heating rates and temperature uniformity of the products. The heating system utilizes an air heat burner rated at 750,000 BTU per hour.

The turn-key installation service for the industrial oven involved three consecutive days of installation with start-up and training at the facility by two Wisconsin Oven factory technicians.

The turn-key installation included reassembly and rewiring all components removed from shipping; connecting customer's utilities to the equipment; debugging and start-up of equipment;  training three personnel on operation and maintenance; and other installation procedures.

This walk-in batch oven was fully factory tested and adjusted prior to shipment to help reduce installation and start-up times. A 150 point Quality Assurance check list was completed to ensure the equipment met all Wisconsin Oven quality standards.

The industrial batch ovens are backed by Wisconsin Oven's 5-Year WOW warranty, which covers all materials for all components (less wear items).

Outokumpu Oy, Finland, announces that the stainless steel fuel tank developed by its engineers and TechROi Fuel Systems has received the New Applications Award presented by the International Stainless Steel Forum in the "Best New Development" category at the ISSF Annual Conference in Hong Kong. Outokumpu HyTens steel grade allowed extremely thin walls and tailored strength, making the tank about three kilograms lighter than the conventional fuel tank made of plastic.

According to the ISSF, the winning concept provides a combination of good design, appropriate material selection, engineering expertise, and sufficient delivery reliability. The stainless steel fuel tank is superior in terms of crashworthiness and does not need surface treatment or maintenance.

Said Outokumpu CEO Mika Seitovirta: "We are very pleased with the ISSF's recognition of this innovation, which showcases the potential that stainless steel and customer focused innovation have in meeting the demands of car industry. As a versatile, long-lasting and 100% recyclable material, stainless steel offers great opportunities for a number of industries to create a more sustainable future."

The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) is a non-profit research and development organization which was founded in 1996 and serves as the world forum for the international stainless steel industry.

Blimp outfitted with microscopes studies the sky

December 9, 2013
Source:

The world's largest airship, the Skyship 600, made its way through the clouds on a month long journey across the U.S. A team of British scientists made the air trek in a blimp as part of a BBC expedition team to study the clouds and life activity in the air. Microscopes from Carl Zeiss Microscopy LLC, Oberkochen, Germany, were used to assist in the research being conducted by the traveling team for the BBC Two series Cloud Lab. The team included an entomologist, meteorologist, and professional explorer who hoped to shed light on the creation of clouds and the relationship between diverse ecosystems and weather.

The team traveled from Florida to California in the air and landed at 13 different air fields along their route. A small ground crew followed the blimp's path to monitor the progress and transport equipment to each stop. Carl Zeiss Microscopy loaned an inverted, compound microscope (Axio Vert.A1) and a stereo microscope (Stemi 2000), which were used by the scientists at the temporary "labs" to be set up on the air fields.

Bugs captured and air cultures grown in the airship were examined and dissected. With the use of the microscopes, scientists were able to look at the cultures grown on filters from different locations for fungi and bacteria. They also examined insects and anything else they came across. After being examined in the field, the bacteria were sent out to be imaged with a scanning electron microscope, as well as possible DNA testing.

The main goal of the exploratory expedition was to explain the changes in weather and its effects. Also, data was correlated to current weather, migratory, and wildlife patterns. The idea started with the question, "What would it be like to live on a cloud?" To be able to be among clouds and accurately measure them, a gentle machine was needed so as not to disrupt or change the cloud patterns. The U.S. was chosen due to the availability of renting an air ship for a month and no country borders needed to be crossed along the way, which makes travel easier. The Cloud Lab will be seen on BBC Two television next year.
