Salt template made by 3D printing enables magnesium bioresorbable bone implants

ETH Zurich researchers announce that they have succeeded in producing magnesium scaffolds with structured porosity that are suitable for bioresorbable bone implants, with the help of a 3D printed salt template.

For the treatment of complex bone fractures or even missing bone parts, surgeons typically deploy metal implants. In this context, an attractive alternative to the traditional materials such as bioinert titanium are biodegradable magnesium and its alloys. Implants made of this light metal are advantageous because they can biodegrade in the body, which can absorb magnesium as a mineral nutrient, rendering a second surgery forimplant removal unnecessary.

To promote rapid healing, the design of implants or their surfaces should be directed towards promotion of cellular adhesion or even in-growth. Materials researchers from the Laboratory of Metal Physics and Technology and the Complex Materials Group at ETH Zurich have therefore collaborated to develop a new procedure for the manufacture of magnesium implants that contain numerous structurally ordered pores, but still retain their mechanical stability. This development is the subject of a forthcoming article in Advanced Materials.

To create a porous structure, the researchers first printed a three-dimensional salt template. Because pure, standard table salt is not suitable for printing, they developed a gel-like salt paste for this purpose. The strut diameters and spacings of the salt template can be tailored by the printing process. To gain sufficient mechanical strength, the salt structure was subsequently sintered. During sintering, the fine-grained materials are heated significantly, while the temperature is chosen safely below the paste's melting point.

The next step was to infiltrate the pores with magnesium melt. "The infiltrates obtained in this way are mechanically very stable and can be easily polished, turned and shaped," says Jörg Löffler, Professor of Metal Physics and Technology in the Department of Materials. After mechanical shaping the researchers dissolved the salt, leaving a pure magnesium implant with numerous, regularly structured pores.

"The possibility to control the pore size, distribution and orientation in the material is decisive for clinical success, because bone cells like to grow into these pores," says Prof. Löffler. Growth into pores is in turn decisive for the rapid integration of the implant in bone.

Solar Atmospheres, Souderton, Pa., recently installed another unique all-metal hot zone vacuum furnace at its facility in Souderton to increase its capacity for processing sensitive materials such as PH stainless, nickel-chrome-base superalloys, titanium, and ferritic and austenitic stainless steels. This is Solar’s third all-metal hot zone furnace installation for its climate-controlled room.

The unique placement of isolation valves, an all-metal moly/stainless steel hot zone, and a stainless steel chamber allows this furnace to attain the level of cleanliness mandated by the demanding aerospace and medical markets. The ability to achieve vacuum levels lower than 5 x 10-6  Torr produces clean, bright results without contamination. Additionally, this furnace incorporates Solar Manufacturing’s latest SolarVac Polaris HMI control system for complete process automation.

Accordong to Jamie Jones, President of Solar Atmospheres, “The increasing demands for cleanliness levels in critical aerospace and medical applications, and the growth in these markets, paved the way for Solar Atmospheres to add capacity through this investment.”

Lucifer Furnaces receives order for a series of heat treat recirculating ovens

February 22, 2019
Source:

Lucifer Furnaces, Warrington, Pa., has supplied several convection ovens to a manufacturer of small medical parts in the southern United States. Model 42-B18 has a working chamber size of 9x9x18 inches, and heats to 1200°F.  Uniformity is achieved with recirculating air flow. A rear mounted heavy-duty fan directs air along side-wall heating elements, then through the working zone.

Parts are protected from heating elements with a 16 gauge stainless steel liner.  Furnaces are insulated with 4.5 inches of multilayered firebrick and 2 inches of insulating cold face block with overlapped seams for reduced thermal loss.  Controls onboard include a Honeywell UDC3500 digital time proportioning temperature controller with four 20-segment setpoint programs, as well as a Honeywell high limit controller to prevent temperature excursions.

Side wall heating element banks consist of coil-wound resistance wire in ceramic holders, making replacement easy. The furnace shell is constructed with heavy gauge sheet steel reinforced throughout to form a rigid freestanding floor model. A horizontal swing door with adjustable latch provides a firm brick-to-brick seal while the safety switch powers-off both fan and heating elements when door is opened.

Stack Metallurgical installs Quintus Mega HIP for heat treating aerospace, medical products

January 23, 2019
Source:

Stack Metallurgical Group, Albany, Ore., announces that it has installed a Quintus Mega-HIP hot isostatic press for heat treating and processing of aerospace, power generation, medical implant, and other products. The model QIH 286 M URC is equipped with proprietary uniform rapid cooling and features a work zone of 63 in. dia. by 102 in. tall, allowing densification of large batches at 29,000 psi and a maximum operating temperature of 2280°F.

The URC design enables all casting areas to cool uniformly, minimizing thermal distortion and non-uniform grain growth. Heating and cooling the workload only once, in a single cycle, enhances efficiency and dramatically reduces per-unit processing costs. In addition, the press offers significant savings in space, energy, and infrastructure investment.

With its new HIP facility coming on-line in 2019, Stack will offer four Nadcap-accredited locations with a focus on the aerospace, power generation, medical implant, and high-end knife and cutlery markets. The company’s modern and extensive equipment line-up offers a comprehensive portfolio of services for demanding clients throughout North America. With a range of aerospace OEM approvals for heat treatment, Stack has built trusted relationships with aerospace titans Boeing, General Electric, Sikorsky, and PCC Aerostructures.

“As a new entrant into the HIP market, it was critical that we continue to have the ability to offer a premium combination of quality and delivery to our clients,” says Doug Puerta, CEO, Stack Metallurgical Group.

Sandvik installs Renishaw laser 3D printers and collaborates on process development

November 28, 2018
Source:

Sandvik Additive Manufacturing, Sweden, announces that it has installed several new Renishaw RenAM 500Q quad laser printing machines, and is also initiating further collaboration with Renishaw in areas such as materials development, AM process technologies, and post-processing.

This print capacity expansion follows a recently announced investment of $22 million in a new plant for the manufacturing of titanium and nickel powders for additive manufacturing. These powders will complement Sandvik’s existing Osprey powder offering to include virtually all alloy groups of relevance today.

The new multi-laser RenAM 500Q systems complement Sandvik’s existing AM machines, which include printers from EOS, Concept Laser, Arcam, and ExOne. Collectively, the machines now cover a very wide range of printing technologies for different materials and applications.

When it comes to additive manufacturing, the optimal balance of weight, strength, hardness, thermal characteristics, flexibility, geometric complexity, surface finish, and other characteristics varies from one application to the next. Therefore, Sandvik works across the entire value chain, from component selection, AM-design and modelling, through material choice/development and optimal printing process, to post-processing, testing, and quality assurance.

With its Osprey range of metal powders, Sandvik has the in-house capability to produce the market’s broadest portfolio of alloys, coupled with the metallurgical expertise to customize the best material for every application.

“We work closely with our customers to tailor alloys in line with their exact requirements, even for small batch print runs,” says Annika Roos, Head of the Powder Division in Sandvik. “Not only do we match the alloy to the purpose, but also we can optimize the particle size for the chosen printing process."
