Timken opens gear drive manufacturing facility in Houston

Source:

The Timken Co., North Canton, Ohio, has opened a new 27,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art gear drive manufacturing facility in Houston. An integral part of the Timken Power Systems group, the new plant will significantly improve production efficiencies in the manufacture of Philadelphia Gear brand high-speed drives. To meet growing demand, Timken Power Systems equipped the facility with two 5-axis machines that employ gear milling technology instead of the traditional hobbing process.

These machines can carry out up to six different operations for producing helical gears, shafts, and pinions from raw material, with the potential to reduce the OE production cycle by weeks.

"The gear milling process, for example, can reduce pure machine time of a standard-sized gear from 110 hours to 25 hours," said Boyd Swearingen, general manager of the new facility, as well as Timken Power Systems' business in the Gulf Coast, Latin American and Middle East regions. The milled gear teeth are finish ground on a traditional Hofler form grinder to achieve the required AGMA 14 quality level of Philadelphia Gear drives. Before shipment, each gearbox then undergoes a full-speed no-load spin test that measures sound levels, temperatures and vibration.

"This investment represents our commitment to meet the growing demands of our energy-market customers," said Carl Rapp, vice president of Timken Power Systems. "The new facility will be able to supply customers in the power generation, oil and gas, refining and pumping industries with reliable, high-speed gearboxes to keep their pumps, compressors and generators running in some of the most challenging operating environments in the world. While low oil prices represent a near-term challenge to the industry, we expect sales for our new high-speed gear drives to continue to grow over the coming years."

Mr. Swearingen noted that in addition to the state-of-the-art equipment, the Houston facility is unique for a gear shop and incorporates ergonomic safeguards in the assembly area. "It's a very clean plant, not what you typically think of as a gear shop," Swearingen said. "In addition to the machinery being totally enclosed and EPA-compliant, all the electrical and plumbing are buried within the foundation to remove hazards and enhance the aesthetics of the facility."

Reducing machining time for aerospace aluminum parts

October 2, 2014
Source:

A new 5-axis, 5-spindle XP aerospace profiler by Fives Cincinnati, Heburn, Ky., lives up to its name— delivering "X-treme Productivity" in machining of structural aluminum parts. With doubled spindle speeds, greater horsepower and higher feedrates on all axes, the purpose-designed machine delivers 50 to 80% percent faster cycle times than prior models, while cutting multiple parts each cycle.

The XP profiler's modular design uses many features incorporated into Cincinnati's record-setting XT titanium profiler. It carries from one to five A/B-axis spindle heads in a traveling-gantry or traveling-table design, allowing it to complete up to five parts per cycle.

The rail-type design allows any practical x-axis length for carrying multiple gantries and creating multiple work zones. The new XP profiler is fully compatible with existing Cincinnati gantry profiler installations. It can use existing Cincinnati profiler beds or X-axis rails, or be installed on independent X-axis rails. X-axis length can be expanded anytime in the field with additional 12' (3.66 m) rail segments. Rail-type machines use dual servo planetary gearbox drives on both sides of the X axis. Y-axis drives can be linear-motor or rack-and-pinion driven.

The new high-speed rotary spindle heads are individually supported and independently driven in A/B axes for increased stiffness, accuracy and dynamic performance. Rotary axis feedrates have been increased to 2400 dpm, more than 400% higher than the prior design, to support higher tool path velocities in 5-axis contouring.

This is complemented with matched feedrates of 1000 ipm (25 mpm) on the X/Y/Z axes for consistently higher path velocities, regardless of the direction of cut. The simple, compact spindle head utilizes individual ballscrew drives for the A and B axes, while the 134-hp (100 kW), 18,000-rpm or 114-hp (85 kW) 20,000-rpm spindles outperform A/C type heads in 5-axis processing of plate parts. The ballscrew drives are completely field-serviceable, an advantage over most A/C head designs.

Multiple spindle configurations are available: three spindles with 1 m center distance, three spindles with 2 m center distance, and five spindles with 1 m center distance. There is also a choice of options in CNC controls, scales/encoders, toolchangers, perimeter guarding, spindle probes, video systems, tool-ID systems, spindle enclosures, mist collection systems and other features.

In first-article cutting tests on a machine recently delivered to a Tier One aerospace supplier, an upper wing skin panel approximately 31 ft. x 8.85 ft. (9.5 x 2.7 m) with a min/max thickness of 0.062 in./0.4 in. (1.57 mm/10.16 mm) and tolerance of +0.000 in./-0.005 in. (+0.000/-0.127 mm) was machined. According to the customer, surface finish was excellent and the part measured within tolerance after checking 2200 points with a CMM.

Seco-Warwick gas-quench furnace equipped with PreNit to heat treat dies and tool steels

August 25, 2014
Source:

Seco-Warwick Corp., Meadville, Pa., announces that a commercial heat treater in the United States has purchased a 15-bar high-pressure gas quench furnace for its facility in the southeast. The unit will be used for through hardening of molds, dies, and various tool steels. The furnace is to be equipped with PreNit LPC (low-pressure carburizing), pre-nitriding, and LPC vacuum carburizing capability.

PreNit is a patented pre-nitriding option for low pressure vacuum carburizing.  PreNitLPC broadens the applications for LPC Vacuum Carburizing by utilizing higher carburizing temperatures. It is a modern, fast, and economical addition to our standard low pressure carburizing system that enhances the process by significantly reducing cycle times.

Through dosing of the nitrogen carrier during controlled heat-up ramp,  the furnace can run at higher temperatures (1000°C/1800°F and above), while maintaining a fine grain structure within the case. The strength properties are similar to parts that have been conventionally carburized at lower temperatures.

This technology saves process costs by reducing the carburizing cycle time and reducing the consumption of process gases (C2H2, C2H4, H2, NH3) as measured in liters and not, as in the case of conventional technologies, in cubic meters per hour.
