U.S. stainless steel sheet and strip producers file antidumping petitions against China

Source:

AK Steel Corp., ATI Flat Rolled Products, North American Stainless, and Outokumpu Stainless USA, the four principal U.S. producers of stainless steel sheet and strip, have filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions charging that unfairly traded imports of stainless steel sheet and strip from the People's Republic of China are causing material injury to the domestic industry.

The antidumping margins alleged by the domestic industry range from 53.69 to 83.24% ad valorem (according to value). The domestic industry's countervailing duty petition alleges that the Chinese government has provided significant subsidies to Chinese producers. The petitions were filed concurrently with the United States Department of Commerce and the United States International Trade Commission.

The domestic industry filed its petitions for relief in response to large and increasing volumes of low-priced imports of stainless steel sheet and strip from China over the past three years that have injured U.S. producers.  The volume of imports of stainless steel sheet and strip from China has increased by 133% since 2013.  Chinese products accounted for 81.2% of the total increase in U.S. stainless steel sheet and strip imports during the past three years.

The petition alleges that Chinese producers have injured the domestic industry by selling their stainless steel sheet and strip at unfairly low prices that significantly undercut domestic market prices.  As a result of this unfair competition, the domestic industry has suffered declines in sales, production, employment, prices, and profits.

Commerce Department and U.S. International Trade Commission will now begin their preliminary investigations, which are expected to be finalized during the first quarter. The entire investigative process will take approximately one year, and it is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2017.

UltraGlow ion nitriding based on glow discharge technology

Source:

Advanced Heat Treat Corp., Waterloo, Iowa, offers UltraGlow ion nitriding, a case-hardening treatment in which glow discharge technology introduces nitrogen ions to the surface of a metal for diffusion into the part.

This process is carried out in a vacuum vessel in which a high-voltage electrical charge forms a plasma, causing nitrogen ions to accelerate and impinge on the metal. When the nitrogen ions bombard the part, they heat up the metal, clean the surface, and cause nitrogen to be absorbed into the surface. This process is sometimes called ion nitrocarburizing or plasma ferritic nitrocarburizing.

Plasma nitriding is widely used to generate a hard case on engineering surfaces for enhanced performance of many tribological components. Recently this process has found wider applications in advanced surfaces in aerospace, electronics and power systems for corrosion protection. In addition, plasma nitrided surfaces are being investigated for fuel cells and human implants.

UltraGlow's case hardening process can create a controlled white layer or compound zone that reduces susceptibility to corrosion or rust. Surface lubricity can be enhanced tenfold, and the process improves overall resistance to wear and tear of moving parts within another assembly.

No toxic salts or gases are used in the manufacturing process. Therefore, it's a safe and clean process that will be around for a lifetime.

The working parameters of Advanced Heat Treat Corp.'s ion nitriding equipment are very large, up to 160 inches in diameter, 360 inches in length, and up to 60,000 pounds in weight.

Magnesium alloy designed for down-hole oil and gas fracking tools dissolves after use

February 15, 2016
Source:

Magnesium Elektron, England, introduces SoluMag, a proprietary high-strength, soluble magnesium alloy developed specifically for making down-hole oil and gas industry fracking tools that quickly and safely dissolve after use. The company has applied for a patent for the alloy.

Traditional fracking requires expensive machinery to remove plugs, balls, and other temporary tools that have served their purpose, to enable an unimpeded flow of oil and gas. Tools made from SoluMag dissolve completely after use, eliminating the need for such costly intervention.

"SoluMag dissolves quickly, predictably, and at lower temperatures than other soluble materials used in these applications," said Guy Roberts, head of sales and marketing for Magnesium Elektron. The first public showing of SoluMag took place at the Global Petroleum Show in Calgary, Canada, in June 2015. A time-lapse video showed the material being dissolved in a saline solution. Also shown were samples at various levels of dissolution, as well as test data covering strength and corrosion rates. This generated a high level of interest from completion companies and tool suppliers and led to initial product sales for laboratory and field testing.

Magnesium Elektron has since announced further product developments, including the ability to customize rates at which the alloy dissolves.

Mr. Roberts noted that SoluMag joins a long line of highly specialized magnesium alloys developed by Magnesium Elektron, including SynerMag, a dissolving alloy now undergoing in-body tests for cardiovascular stents. "Our aerospace pedigree means that our alloys are of the highest quality and consistency, so end-users can be confident that tools made from SoluMag will behave predictably down-hole."
