Oxford Instruments Asylum Research, Goleta, Calif., announces the new Cypher VRS Video-Rate AFM, said to be the first and only full-featured video-rate atomic force microscope.  It uses small cantilevers to dramatically increase scan speed and resolution and a unique system design approach that makes it immune to ordinary vibrations and temperature fluctuations.

The Cypher S makes routine measurements far easier, and makes possible the most challenging. The Cypher VRS sets a new benchmark for speed, enabling high-resolution imaging of dynamic events at up to 625 lines/second, corresponding to about ten frames per second. For comparison, this is about 300 times faster than typical AFMs,  and ten times faster than current "fast scanning" AFMs.

The Cypher VRS is the only AFM to achieve these speeds while still offering the versatility and ease of use of a full-featured research AFM. It is ideal for researching dynamic nano-events such as biochemical reactions, membrane studies, self-assembly, and boundless other applications in materials and life sciences.

Wisconsin Oven ships batch oven to Flame Treating to temper steel parts

January 30, 2017
Source:

Wisconsin Oven Corp., East Troy, Wis.,  has shipped a natural gas-fired draw batch oven to Flame Treating Systems Inc. in Durham, N.C., for tempering various steel parts. Flame Treating provides customized flame hardening systems to customers, and also provides in-house flame hardening services. The addition of this tempering oven allows the company to efficiently temper parts in-house.

The tempering oven has a maximum temperature of 1250°F and basket dimensions of 4x3x4 feet. Steel parts are loaded into the draw batch oven in the basket on two stainless steel pier rails with the load capacity of 2000 pounds gross. The recirculation system features a combination air flow arrangement that utilizes a 7000 CFM @ 10 HP plug-mounted blower. The combination airflow arrangement provides both horizontal and vertical upward airflow, which maximizes heating rates and temperature uniformity of the product.

"We are starting to do a significant amount of flame hardening for customers in our shop now," says Mark Sirrine, President of Flame Treating Systems Inc. , "so we needed a better solution than sending parts out for tempering. We installed the oven in the warehouse room adjacent to our 2000-lb. capacity spin flame hardening machine. Five days later it was in production, tempering batches of 800-pound sprockets. That pretty much tells you what you need to know about the ease of installation. We're looking forward to continuing to expand our services in the mid-Atlantic region for both localized hardening and tempering."

One Minute Mentor: Removing the Passive Layer in Low-Temperature Gas Nitriding

January 27, 2017
Source:

The recent advent of low-temperature gas nitriding (for the production of the S-phase in stainless steel) as opposed to regular high-temperature (above 550 °C) gas nitriding (of regular steel) had to find a way to remove the passive layer in this low-temperature condition.

Patent EP 1707646 B1 (2005): The process set forth in this patent uses a gaseous carbon donor compound (such as acetylene, ethylene, propane, butane, or carbon monoxide) with ammonia at temperatures greater than 570°F.  It is carried out in a reactor vessel made of metal such as iron, nickel, cobalt, etc.  The catalytic action of the reactor vessel will generate HCN. The HCN will depassivate the stainless steel surface through the following reactions:

2NH + C2H2 â†’ 2HCN + 3H2

Cr2O3 + 6HCN â†’ 2Cr(CN)3 + 3H2O

The carbon and nitrogen in 2Cr(CN)3 diffuse inward and form the nitrocarburized case, leaving a clean surface. The dewpoint must be kept below 40 °F to keep the metal surface being treated from repassivating, which means that the flow of gas must be continuous to eject excessive water formed during the depassivation and nitrocarburizing reaction. After the depassivation step, ordinary gas nitriding with NH3 + H2 + N2 atmosphere can be carried out as desired. The exhaust gas is burned and decomposed at the exit as nitrogen and CO2.
