Novel HVOF-Deposited Coating Using Recycled WC Powders
October 9, 2019
Source:
Engineers from InnoTech Alberta evaluated a coating consisting of tungsten carbide overspray for parts requiring moderate-to-low wear resistance. Tungsten carbide-based metal matrix composite coatings are widely used in the resource sector. Typically, the coatings are applied by high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spraying, and can provide excellent levels of protection against wear and corrosion. However, it has disadvantages: It is relatively high in cost due to the high proportion of WC in the powder blend, and the low deposition efficiency of the HVOF powder. It is common for approximately 50% of the powder to be deposited on a substrate, with the excess “over-spray†collected and disposed of.
This study will look at using this “over-spray†in a coating for moderate to low wear applications, rather than disposing of it. The development of a lower-cost coating with a degree of corrosion resistance was studied. The coating is comprised of “over-spray†WC-based powder blended with a standard 316-grade stainless steel. Microstructure, chemical analysis, corrosion resistance, and abrasion wear performance of the overlay were discussed in the presentation.

Microstructure Evaluation and Corrosion Behavior of Cold Spray Deposited Tantalum Coatings
Source:
Engineers from the University of Nevada and ASB Industries reported on a study of a tantalum coating deposited on an aluminum substrate by cold spraying. Tantalum is one the few materials that possesses excellent corrosion resistance in acidic, salt, and organic chemical environments. However, due to cost limitations, application of this material is limited to extreme corrosion conditions. Tantalum coatings have been sought as a means to protect chemical processing equipment and electronics.
Optimum density and impurity levels are lacking in traditional plasma spray coatings, and this limits the usefulness of tantalum coating. However, cold spray has emerged as an attractive technique to produce dense tantalum coatings.
In this study, the tantalum coating was deposited on an aluminum substrate by cold spraying. Subsequently, the deposited coating was subjected to heat treatment cycles. The evolution of microstructure and micro-hardness of the coating as a function of heat treatment was studied, and its electrochemical corrosion behavior as a function of heat treatment was also presented.
