ITSC 2019 abstract: Deposition of silicon carbide based coatings using high velocity oxy-fuel spraying
April 5, 2019
Source:
Development of a new SiC-based powder has enabled the deposition of dense silicon carbide coatings using thermal spraying techniques for the first time. Previously it had not been possible to deposit good quality coatings of SiC using thermal spraying, as SiC decomposes at 2700°C.
The lower flame temperature of the HVOF process, compared to plasma spraying, has enabled deposition of dense SiC based coatings, which have the potential to replace other wear resistant coatings such as alumina and WC and Cr3C2 based cermets. Additionally, the low-density material makes it attractive from a weight saving perspective, whilealso being a cost-effective alternative for a wide range of industrial applications.
This paper discusses the deposition of SiC based coatings, using gas and liquid fuelled high velocity oxy-fuel spraying techniques. The properties of the deposited coatings in terms of microstructure, hardness, adhesion/cohesion strength, wear, and erosion resistance have been determined, and the performance compared with alumina and WC-CoCr HVOF coatings. Based on the findings of this work, recommendations are made on potential applications of SiC based coatings.

Spray Tips: Selective galvanizing by cold spray
March 31, 2019
Source:
Cold spraying has been found to be a useful approach for the selective protection of localized areas that are the likely locations for corrosive attack, as shown in the diagram. For example, folded or welded seams in galvanized sheet metal used for applications such as automotive door panels or stamped gas tanks often are susceptible to corrosion because the protective galvanizing layer is damaged or removed in the assembly process. Such areas can be easily protected by local application to the affected areas of an anticorrosion coating such as zinc.
The diagram is a schematic of a steel hem structure in which an inner piece is secured to an outer panel by a metal fold or hem. The potential placement of supplemental zinc protection in the vicinity of the hem is illustrated. Because the duration of galvanic protection by a sacrificial metal such as zinc on steel is linearly proportional to the amount of sacrificial metal available, it then becomes possible to “program†the amount of sacrificial protection according to the severity of the specific geometry and expected service environment.
In this manner, the galvanic protection can be strategically placed instead of relying on large expanses of precoated material to achieve protection goals in localized features. This would be similar in concept to the fabrication of tailored panels of steel with differing strengths and thicknesses for metal forming. Potentially, both weight and cost savings could be realized through such an approach.

Seco Warwick CAB furnace enables auto parts maker to cut costs, control brazing quality
Source:
Seco Warwick, Meadville, Pa., has delivered and commissioned the first-ever vacuum purging semi-continuous Active Only CAB furnace for a North American automotive aftermarket manufacturer. It is the company’s first furnace of any type, and simultaneously its largest capital equipment investment to date.
The new semi-continuous Active Only CAB furnace, equipped with vacuum purging in the loading and unloading chamber, is one of its kind in the industry. It allows for the reduction of nitrogen consumption and cost, and it provides extraordinary control of brazing atmosphere quality. This applies in particular to heat exchangers with joints brazed in a closed space. Vacuum purging allows for the perfect removal of oxygen from these spaces before brazing, which cannot be achieved by traditional purging.
Many business owners are starting to figure out that not all services should be outsourced. One such industry group is automotive aftermarket manufacturers, who, with Seco Warwick technology, gain an opportunity to rein in their costs by saving money on outsourcing, as well as reduction of nitrogen expenses. The new furnace allows customers to braze their own heat exchangers, control their own quality, and manage their production schedules more reliably to improve deliveries to their customers.
