Mechanical Testing of Metals, September 24-27, 2018

This is a hands-on introduction to standard mechanical testing and the properties derived from those tests, together with a discussion of testing philosophy to determine suitability for service and suitability for manufacture. Standardized testing procedures (ASTM, SAE, AWWA, etc.) are discussed, including limitations of a test, why specific requirements are present in the test procedure, and interpretation of experimental results. There is discussion of how metallurgical variables can affect test results, and how microstructure can affect selection of a given testing procedure. (For example, hardness testing of wrought vs. cast material.) This course is taught at a level that requires some algebraic manipulation as well as the use of logarithms. Students are required to bring a scientific calculator.

Additive manufacturing (AM), also termed as "3-D Printing", is a digital manufacturing process, which uses 3-D design data to build objects by depositing material, usually layer upon layer. Often referred to as the third industrial revolution, the advancement of AM technologies has brought a revolutionary change in design, engineering and manufacturing processes. The rising popularity of AM across various industries has resulted in an exponential increase in demand for metal powders. Powder metallurgy (P/M) is a metal working process involving production of powdered metals and/ forming precision metal components from metal powders by compacting in a die. Materials now routinely processed by P/M include aerospace super alloys, low-alloy steels, and tool steels; some of which are virtually impossible to process by any other means. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the science and technology of both AM and P/M processes, the materials used in those processes, geometric flexibility, industrial applications and limitations.

The unique properties of the shape memory alloy Nitinol have led to many transformational medical device innovations, including self-expanding stents, percutaneously delivered heart valves, kink resistant guide wires, and self-locking orthopedic devices. Its super elastic qualities allow the alloy to withstand large amounts of recoverable strain, and its potential for excellent bio compatibility and fatigue resistance make it the material of choice for some of the most demanding medical device applications. However, Nitinol's unique properties are very dependent upon alloy composition and processing. In this course, you will learn the variables that affect Nitinol's properties, how to control them, and how its unique properties can be applied in medical devices. Hands on in the lab is included.

This "Hands-On" course presents information on microstructures, heat treatment and use of each group of alloys. You will be able to view actual structures on a projection screen.The features of the structures are pointed out and discussed. You will then examine the over 200 mounts at their microscope stations and compare them with an illustrated and annotated notebook of the structures. There are no required prerequisites, but the basic knowledge of sample preparation, heat treating or metallurgy will enhance the understanding of the presented material. You are encouraged to bring prepared metallographic specimens to the class for discussion.
