Mechanical Testing of Metals, April 1-4, 2019

This is a hands-on introduction to standard mechanical testing and the properties derived from those tests, together with a discussion of testing philosophy to determine suitability for service and suitability for manufacture. Standardized testing procedures (ASTM, SAE, AWWA, etc.) are discussed, including limitations of a test, why specific requirements are present in the test procedure, and interpretation of experimental results. There is discussion of how metallurgical variables can affect test results, and how microstructure can affect selection of a given testing procedure. (For example, hardness testing of wrought vs. cast material.) This course is taught at a level that requires some algebraic manipulation as well as the use of logarithms. Students are required to bring a scientific calculator.

Practical Interpretation of Microstructures, April 8-10, 2019

This "Hands-On" course presents information on microstructures, heat treatment and use of each group of alloys. You will be able to view actual structures on a projection screen.The features of the structures are pointed out and discussed. You will then examine the over 200 mounts at their microscope stations and compare them with an illustrated and annotated notebook of the structures. There are no required prerequisites, but the basic knowledge of sample preparation, heat treating or metallurgy will enhance the understanding of the presented material. You are encouraged to bring prepared metallographic specimens to the class for discussion.

Introduction to Metallurgical Lab Practices, May 6-8, 2019

Basic techniques commonly used in a Metallurgical Laboratory will be taught in this class. You will become familiar with metallography by sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching samples. These samples will be examined and photomicrographs obtained by using optical microscopes equipped with digital cameras. Various Microhardness and Macrohardness equipment will be used to demonstrate the strengths and limitations of the tests. Tensile Testing and Impact Testing will be performed on standard samples. Basic principles and sample demonstration on the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) will be covered. Hands on testing complimented by lectures on the basics of the tests will give a thorough overview of these procedures. This is the course you need if you learn by doing and could use an overview of Metallographic Lab procedures.

Practical Fractography, May 14-15, 2019

This course provides a practical understanding of fractography through a combination of lecture and hands on experience. Theory and examples presented in the lectures are reinforced by macro and micro examination of failed parts in the lab. Visual examination as well as stereo microscopy and scanning electron microscopy will be utilized to interpret example fractures. Improve your skills in this vital portion of most failure examinations.
