Magnesium has a hcp structure with c/a ratio close to the ideal value and basal slip occurs at room temperature. During high temperature deformation (> 225┬░C), prismatic slip is also activated and so the ductility is considerably higher. Magnesium is a very light metal (density: 1.738 g/cc) and has high rigidity in certain directions. The metal has a high damping capacity which makes it useful in some engineering applications. Magnesium is generally shaped using hot extrusion process.
