The December issue of Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis features the classic article, “Grain Shapes and Other Metallurgical Applications of Topology,” by Cyril Stanley Smith. Prof. Smith’s manuscript, which was originally published in Metal Interfaces in 1952, is not widely available, despite the impact it has had across several fields of study.
MMA has reprinted it in hopes that researchers and scientists who utilize and refer to von Neumann’s Law in their work will benefit from reading the manuscript that generated this important discussion. We thank William Waites, a researcher at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics, for bringing this article to our attention.
