Cerenovus develops Nitinol mechanical thrombectomy stentriever devices for stroke

Researchers from Cerenovus, Ireland, report that the EMboTrap and the EmboTrap II, Nitinol mechanical thrombectomy (MT) devices, have been launched in Europe with great success and will soon be launched in the United States.

Exploiting the self-expanding nature of NiTi, such ‘stentriever’ devices are designed to be deployed at the site of an occluding clot in the cerebral vasculature of an acute ischemic stroke patient. Recanalization is achieved upon the simultaneous retrieval of the device and thrombus from the patient.

Superelastic NiTi’s ability to accommodate significant strains without permanent deformation is highly desirable in stentriever design for device flexibility, durability, and conformance during a MT procedure. In addition, for optimum device-clot engagement, NiTi’s tuneable ability to exhibit a relatively constant radial force at various vessel diameters greatly increase retrieval success rates.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability, with 15 million cases worldwide every year. In collaboration with international researchers and clinicians, Cerenovus seeks to develop new understanding that will drive innovative solutions for the treatment of this challenging and devastating disease. Efforts are guided by extensive studies into the properties and behavior of blood clots, and detailed modelling of the challenging anatomy of the cerebral vasculature.

This abstract is from a presentation at SMST 2018, the International Conference on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies, which took place in Ireland in May.
