PhoenixTM develops thermal barrier for aluminum brazing

Phoenix Thermal Measurement, Clearwater, Fla., has developed a new thermal barrier designed for use in brazing aluminum parts. It addresses the problems of protection from hydrofluoric acid produced from chemicals in the flux combining with moisture within the thermal barrier, and oxygen in the air leaking from the thermal barrier that can “pollute” the nitrogen atmosphere inside the furnace. This leads to a deterioration in the braze quality of products within the immediate vicinity of the barrier.

The barrier is designed for brazing aluminum parts such as radiators, oil coolers, condensers, etc., which are generally brazed in a controlled atmosphere brazing furnace. This is a temperature-critical operation, and it is common for a ‘Hot Box’ type temperature measuring system to be used to monitor the profile of the product throughout the furnace to ensure the quality of the braze.

The TS08 series thermal barriers have no high temperature insulation cloth exposed to the external furnace atmosphere. It is this cloth that breaks down to expose the base insulation layers beneath. Preventing exposure to the furnace atmosphere stops the barrier deterioration, reducing maintenance costs and vastly extending the life of the system.  TS08 series barriers are available in a range of sizes and can be custom built to suit specific furnace clearances.
