Franz Jeglitsch, emeritus professor of Metallurgy and Materials Testing from Montan University Leoben, passed away in July 2016 at the age of 82 years. Born in Klagenfurth, Austria, Jeglitsch studied Metallurgy in Leoben, and graduated in 1963 from the Institute for Metallurgy and Materials Testing, studying with the unforgettable Roland Mitsche. From 1978 to 1981 he served as director of the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf and in 1982 became full professor at the Montan University Leoben and director of the Institute for Metallurgy. Between 1987 and 1991 he was a very successful rector of the Montan University and became representative of the Styrian regional government, responsible for Science, Industry and Culture.
He was chairman of the Executive Board of DGM (German Society for Materials) 1997-1998 and later named an honorary member of the society. Jeglitsch published about 200 scientific papers mainly in the fields of metallography, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, intermetallics, and powder metallurgy. He was member of several scientific academies and received many technical awards including the IMS Henry Clifton Sorby Award (1988).
