H.C. Starck’s Fabricated Products Division, Newton, Mass., has launched its new molybdenum thermal spray powders, which are designed to protect and restore the surfaces of coatings and metal components from the effects of corrosion, erosion and wear. Applications are wide-ranging and include automobiles, trains, aircraft and boats as well as chemical plants, food manufacturing and packaging, mining and earth moving, and power generation.
“The new molybdenum thermal spray powders are optimized for diverse spraying processes such as plasma, flame, detonation, and HVAF and HVOF for high velocity spray coating applications,” said Andreas Mader, CEO of the Fabricated Products Division. “Our engineers concentrate on providing texture control to enhance the uniformity and performance consistency of our powders.”
Molybdenum is a material with a silvery-white luster, reminiscent of tin. With a density of 10.22 g/cm³, it is considerably lighter than tungsten, but has a similarly high melting point (2,620°C) and boiling point (5,560°C). This high strength, tough, hard metal has excellent thermal conductivity, low heat resistance and low degree of thermal expansion.
Headquartered in Germany, the company’s product portfolio also includes tungsten powders and ceramic components. It operates three locations of its Fabricated Products Division in the U.S: its national headquarters in Massachusetts, and two other facilities in Euclid, Ohio, and Coldwater, Michigan.
