Allegheny Technologies Inc., Pittsburgh, offers its NiTiNb shape memory alloy for coupling devices that need cryogenic martensite transformation temperatures and also need room temperature storage capability.
Study will evaluate shape-memory alloy wires around concrete columns to prevent deterioration
A team of researchers from the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering and Qatar University has won a $779,000 grant based on shape memory alloy reinforcements for deteriorating reinforced-concrete structures such as bridges.
Nanoindentation technique reveals phase transformation in magnetic shape memory alloys
Researchers at Texas A&M University, College Station, have examined stress-induced martensitic phase transformations in magnetic shape memory alloys via in-situ nanoindentation techniques.
Probing metal solidification nondestructively
Researches and collaborators at Los Alamos Laboratory (Los Alamos, N.M.) used nondestructive imaging techniques to study the solidification of metal alloy samples. The team used complementary methods of proton radiography at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) and synchrotron x-ray radiography at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) to make the measurements. This is the first time that high-energy protons have been used to nondestructively image a large metal sample during melting and solidification.
3D metal printing
3D printing of stainless steel parts This video from How It’s Made shows the process of building stainless steel parts by 3D printing. Three-dimensional metal printers can build parts faster and cheaper than conventional casting or machining. They build objects from successive layers of stainless steel powders that are then fused together at high temperatures. […]
