Dr. Aziz Asphahani, FASM, is joining QuesTek Innovations LLC, Evanston, Ill., as the new chief executive officer effective July 1, 2013. He will lead the company’s efforts in growth and business development. Asphahani has an extensive background in both metallurgy and business, having acted as Director of Technology/R&D at Cabot Corporation, vice president of sales and marketing at Haynes International, and President at both CABVAL and CARUS Chemical Company.
Ipsen to supply vacuum furnace for additive manufacturing
Ipsen USA, Cherry Valley, Ill., has been selected by ExOne, North Huntingdon, Pa., to provide vacuum furnaces for additive manufacturing production. ExOne is a global provider of three-dimensional printing machines and printed products. Its goal is to simplify the purchasing process for 3D printers by offering a complete printer-furnace package.
IMS announces Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis paper as the winner of the Buehler Best Paper Award for 2012
The International Metallographic Society announced that the winner of the Buehler Best Paper Award for 2012 is “Full-Thickness Decarburization of the Steel Shell of an Annealing Furnace” by Amber M. Dalley. The article was published in the February 2012 issue of Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis. The award was officially announced at the IMS Awards Banquet in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 7, 2013. The award is sponsored by Buehler and includes a plaque and a check for $1,000.
Thermal Spray Society prepares Accepted Practice for bond testing

Sikorsky completes testing of 35-ft. composite helicopter rotor blades
Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford, Conn., has completed the initial phase of testing for the composite main and tail rotor blades manufactured for the U.S. Marine Corps CH-53K heavy lift helicopter program. At 35 ft span length, and almost 3 ft chord width, the CH-53K main rotor blade has 12% more surface area than the CH-53E blade.
