Metals plant slated for $10 million expansion

GKN Sinter Metals, Auburn Hills, Mich., is planning a $10 million expansion of its Gallipolis production facility in southeastern Ohio’s Gallia County. Matt Daniels, manager of the plant in Gallipolis, Ohio, said the project is expected to add 50 full-time jobs and generate up to $20 million in additional sales for the company over the next 2-3 years.

U.S. Chrome to scale up commercial production of CoP/SiC replacement for chrome plating

U.S. Chrome, Stratford, Conn., announces that it will scale up commercial production of its family of TriCom electroplating technologies. TriCom-H is based on a composite microstructure of a cobalt-phosphorus alloy matrix with uniformly dispersed fine silicon carbide particles. Offering extremely high hardness and high wear resistance, it represents a drop-in replacement for hard chrome, without environmental drawbacks, according to company sources.

Carpenter to build superalloy powder facility in Alabama

Carpenter Technology Corp., Wyomissing, Pa., announces that it will build its new superalloy powder facility in Alabama, directly across the street from its nearly completed $518 million ultra-premium product manufacturing facility near Athens. Three weeks ago, Carpenter announced a multi-faceted agreement with United Technologies Corp.

Vacuum Induction Degassing furnace produces vacuum treated steels in one step

ALD Vacuum Technologies, Germany, has developed the Vacuum Induction Degassing (VID) furnace concept for special applications in the ferrous and non-ferrous metals industry for charge weights up to 30 tons. Smaller steel shops and foundries will be able to produce high quality vacuum treated steels with the VID furnace in one step. The temperature losses during degassing treatment are compensated by induction heating.

Materion opens applications lab for sputter-coatings development and characterization

Materion Microelectronics & Services, a Materion Corporation business, Cleveland, Ohio,  has opened a Materials Applications Laboratory in Westford, Mass. It will serve three functions: produce coatings for customer evaluations of PVD materials, promote customer education/collaboration,  and support Materion internal R&D. The laboratory features thin film equipment, such as a sputtering system with a 150-mm diameter target, and an electron beam box coater.
