The 2017 edition of Volume 18 builds on articles devoted to specific friction- or wear-critical components supported by coverage on the fundamental physical principles of friction, lubrication, and wear. In addition to basic concepts, methods of lab testing and analysis, materials selection, and field diagnosis and monitoring of friction and wear are also covered. The 2017 edition of this volume has undergone a significant expansion and revision of coverage by a new group of global experts. It has been updated with numerous material and technology developments on coatings, lubrication, tool and die wear, and a number of typical tribological components or classes of components. While it is impossible to include all the types of moving mechanical assemblies that pose tribological challenges, Volume 18 emphasizes a structured approach in analyzing complex tribosystems involving thermal, mechanical, materials, and chemical influences.

The new Volume 18 provides an essential resource for a broad audience including researchers, engineers, technicians, students, and quality control personnel. The sections on solid friction, lubricants and lubrication, and wear and surface damage contain basic physical principles that help to introduce the materials-oriented professional to established concepts in tribology. The Handbook is also intended for use by individuals with a background in mechanics or lubricant chemistry seeking information on trends and developments on materials and coatings.

Review

"The new Volume 18 was unveiled a quarter of a century after I chaired the first one, and I’m pleased that the earlier edition has passed the test of time. While the suite of materials options, lubricants, applications, and surface engineering technologies has changed a lot since 1992, most of the basic tribology principles have not. Therefore, it seems appropriate that the new volume retains a mixture of tutorial articles and new content. Editor George Totten has done an excellent job, especially since many of the experts who contributed to the earlier edition are either no longer active in the field or have passed on.

The two main changes I noticed about the new volume are its reorganization and its expanded focus on lubrication. Appropriately, the volume begins with a global, tribosystems-based approach to problem definition. That section is followed by one on friction, tribo-testing, adhesion, frictional heating, mapping, and material effects. Updated contributions highlight the emergence of nano-tribology and fine-scale phenomena. It delves more deeply into fundamentals than one might expect for a handbook. For example, the discussion of frictional heating may be surprising to engineers who are simply looking for a ‘back-of-the-envelope’ approach, but instead discover a rigorous academic treatise on the subject.

In light of George’s background in the lubricants community, it is not surprising to find substantial content on lubricated tribosystems. Recent formulations based on ionic liquids are highlighted, and there is a wealth of information on application-specific lubrication, case studies, and condition monitoring. Significantly, in recognition of recent interest in alternative energy, there is a new section on wind turbine gearbox tribology. As was the goal of my earlier volume, this handbook is far more than a compilation of data. Rather it is both a tutorial and a comprehensive multi-disciplinary resource. George Totten and the contributors are to be complimented on producing a benchmark volume, not only for use by the materials community, but for the broader engineering community as well."
