How Processors Are Made/Microchips

Celebrate 50 years of Moore’s Law: Watch as Chips Are Made with Millions of Transistors

John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley discovered the transistor effect and developed the first transistor in December 1947 at Bell Labs. This photo shows the original design. By 1965, Intel founder Gordon Moore was predicting that the number of transistors on a chip would double about every 18 months into the future. So far it has held true, as designs and processes have advanced. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Moore’s Law, here is an animation that shows the fabrication of transistors on microchips.
