How the Gold Medals for the Rio Olympics Were Made

For the Rio Olympics 2016, the 5130 Olympic and Paralympic medals were produced in Casa da Moeda do Brasil, the country’s mint — alongside its currency.  It takes 48 hours to make each 500-gram medal, so the mint had 80 people working on the medals around the clock.
