New model could help make metal alloys even stronger

MIT researchers Arvind Kalidindi and Christopher A. Schuh, FASM, developed a Monte-Carlo-based simulation that helps them determine how grain size changes as a function of temperature and allows them to produce equilibrium phase diagrams for nanocrystalline alloys. Their work was published in “Phase Transitions in Stable Nanocrystalline Alloys” in the Journal of Materials Research (JMR), Vol 32, issue 11, and won them the 2017 JMR Paper of the Year award. Using animation to depict grain structure changes, this video explains how their research could help make metal alloys even stronger.
