Color in Minerals and Gemstones

  • November 14, 2018
  • The Quarters BBQ, 4516 Wyoming Blvd NE
  • Albuquerque , NM , USA

Paul Hlava

President of Access to Gems & Minerals

(and Sandia retiree)

TOPIC: Color in Minerals and Gemstones

The colors that one sees when looking at a mineral or gemstone are due to the response of that person’s eye to the energies of the light coming from the mineral, the emission spectrum of the illumination, and, most importantly, physical phenomena in the material that cause some colors to be absorbed while others are undisturbed or enhanced.  It is beyond the scope of this talk to do more than touch on the physiology of the eye that allows us to see colors.  Likewise, we will not dwell on the emission spectra of various light sources.  Rather, we will concentrate on the various ways in which materials, especially minerals and their heights of perfection - gemstones, produce color from white light.

SPEAKER: Paul Hlava is well known to many people in the mineral and gem fields.  He has a BS in geology from the U of Wisconsin and an MS in geology from UNM.  He retired ten years ago from Sandia National Laboratories after 33 years of working in/running the electron microprobe laboratory.  Paul is the president of Access to Gems & Minerals, a small business selling gems and jewelry that he started in 1988.  He has been president of the AGMC several times and has long been chairman of the annual show – The Treasures of the Earth.  He acts as a consultant/resource to the New Mexico Faceter's Guild.  He often gives talks on a variety of topics related to geology, mineralogy, and gemology such as this one.
