 Abstract: NASA Glenn's heritage in the oxidation of ceramic turbine engine materials is presented.  Part I encompasses a history of the Center itself.   Part II describes: 1) the ground-breaking work in which the rate of oxidation of silicon carbide in oxygen water vapor was quantified, 2) the identification of reaction products using mass spectrometry, 3) the determination of material recession rates, and finally 4) the development of environmental barrier coatings to protect SiC-based materials from water vapor attack.

Biography:  Originally from Columbus OH, Mr. Fox has 32 years' experience as a Materials Research Engineer in the Materials and Structures Division.  He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Ceramic Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1982 and 1985, respectively.  In 1985 he joined the Ceramics Branch at the NASA Lewis Research Center.  Since 1991 he has been a member of the Environmental Effects and Coatings Branch conducting research on the oxidation and corrosion of ceramics and superalloys for turbine engine hot section applications. His technical expertise includes thermogravimetric analysis, burner rig testing of materials, scanning electron microscopy, high temperature mass spectrometry, and plasma spray of thermal / environmental barrier coatings.  In 2004, Mr. Fox received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, "for valued contributions to the development of advanced materials technology and its transfer to turbine engine manufacturers".  He is the author of 23 refereed journal papers, five book chapters, seven NASA Technical Memorandums and 44 technical meeting papers.  He represents the Glenn Research Center by promoting science and engineering at the kindergarten to 12th-grade level, having been active in outreach activities since 1995.
